Chris Reeve Knives | Umnumzaan Umnumzaan: The Boss In every sense of the definition, Chris Reeve Umnumzaan is a knife deserving respect. Developed from the 20+ year heritage of the Sebenza, this bold, innovative 3.6 inch folding pocket knife is one to be reckoned with for its inventive design features and ability to get the job done. A ceramic ball cReates the interface between the blade locking surface and the integral locking arm surface. The ball doubles to drop into a detent on the blade to ensure the blade does not open accidentally. Typical of Chris Reeve Knives, the Umnumzaan's pivot strength is more robust than other folders. The large pivot screw and pin are supported by large thrust washers. These perforated phOSPhor bronze washers reduce friction and double to retain the fluorinated grease for longer lubriCATion thereby extending the life of the knife. The thumb lug doubles as the stop pin, ensuring a solid lockup. Around the lug is a polyurethane o-ring that acts as a shock absorber to cushion the impact of the lug against the handle. Never wishing to copy other designs without giving credit, Grant and Gavin Hawk originated the shock absorber concept in one of their many innovative designs. We appreciate their consent for Chris to use this adaptation of their concept.

Six weeks in...
My Zan arrived six weeks ago. I've had it with me pretty well every day since. I have to hack cardboard into manageable pieces for recycling, and open huge boxes. It shrugs this work off and is paper cutting sharp despite nothing more than stropping. No, I haven't taken it camping or hacked apart any crashed cars with it - probably never will, Its perfect for me.

I have witnessed CRK grow up - ordering knives from Chris & his wife at their home at the kitchen table. True excellence is long term and CRK - who invented the frame lock (Hope Chris patented that Huge industry changing invention) to exactness in every knife that left his shop —- I am so excited to have filled my gap by getting a new “Boss” with the new blade stock S45VN & drop point blade to go with the beautiful detailed perfection w/ highest grade titanium & very unique & useful handle design that provides art that doubles w/ important better grip ability. That unparalleled CRK lock up - like the bank vault sound upon opening - measured fairly with the fit & finish & door closing experiencing of a new Bentley Continental R Coupe. If you want to know how incredible CRK are look at or get your hands on an Special Edition Apollo Moon Landing Large and/or Small Sebenza 21 /31 - then you will be collecting CRK like I have in every model for 30 plus years like I have. When I hear CRK’s are pricey - well I say so is true perfection in any realm - from $100k watches to $200k automobiles. My 30 year old Sebenza works as perfectly today as 30 years ago. I have wanted this knife for quite a while. Thanks to DLT Trading’s awesome selection and service I was able to get one. Knife came in perfect condition. Was a little stiff to open at first, but that went away in a few days. I made this mistake of trying to open this knife like a Sebenza. As someone who owns many ZT, benchmade and spyderco knives I have to say this is on a completely different level. This is art and function perfected. Build quality is beyond amazing, blade centering is ALWAYS perfect. Handel texture is just enough to be grippy and not be painful/annoying to hold and use. Umnumzaan, ya, excellent!
I did not think anything could compete with my CR Inkosi but, I was mistaken. The Umnumzaan is just as good. I cannot pick a favorite. I am lucky to own both. I like DLT, my favorite knife store. Next up in my wish list, the Paysan. It’s only money.
It’s not the Boss for nothing!
The other reviews here are spot on. If you have a Sebenza you will love this knife. Opens smooth as silk and the fit and finish set the standard for production folders. I think I said in my Sebenza review that if God carries a pocket knife he carries a Sabenza. Well I stand corrected, I think he rotates into his EDC an Umnumzaan. Finally you can’t go wrong with DLT customer service!
I finally took the leap
I finally took the leap and added a CRK Umnumzaan to my collection ... and my first thought at unboxing this knife and handling it was WHY did I wait so long? Umnumzaan
It is a great bigger sized knife, with the fit and finish you expect from a chris reeve knife. Smooth action with rock solid lockup and dead centered blade. Also really like the new packaging they are using feels much higher quality.

Great knife but too large for my needs. Wife they had a medium sized Umnumzaan with about a 3.2 inch blade. As always, DLT Customer Service was outstanding.

Let me start by saying that for many years I, like many others, have knocked the CRK folding knife collection for what seems to be a sort of general consensus that it is an unjustifiable amount of money to ask for a folder.

that the consumer would come to this conclusion. Well folks, at the risk of sounding like all the other CRK fan boys, these knives are perfection. My Umnamzaan is everything that the fan boys said it would be and I certainly can say that I feel my money has been well spent. What it all comes down to, and I guess it was obvious along, is that you can pay for the materials but at the end of the day my friends it's all about the engineering. This is what we are paying for boys and CRK have it in spades.
