About Cold Steel Bush Ranger

For those intrigued by the Bush Ranger but seeking a budget-friendly folding field knife, Mike Wallace developed the Bush Ranger Lite. With an almost identical 3 1/2” Sheffield clip point blade, the Lite version of the Bush Ranger utilizes durable 8Cr13MoV steel and a thumb stud for ease of opening. As comfort in use is key, the Bush Ranger Lite’s handle is comprised of expertly contoured glass filled nylon (GFN) that fits your hand like a glove. With ambidextrous carry options offered through an interchangeable pocket clip, and weighing just 4.8 ounces, the Bush Ranger Lite makes carrying a breeze. As always, safety and security continue to remain priority number one to Cold Steel, so we supplied the Bush Ranger Lite with a state-of-the-art rocker lock featuring a secondary safety that when engaged is enormously resistant to shock and impact. We’re confident you’ll agree, the Bush Ranger Lite is an excellent first folding knife or budget-friendly, reliable utility knife for everyday carry (EDC).

Best Folding Outdoor Knife

Tyler S.

I have been carrying the Cold Steel Bush Ranger for a few months now and I find it exceedingly difficult to put down. With a few easy modifications, this knife checks all the right boxes for me. I generally avoid knives with aggressively shaped handles in favor of neutral handles but my hands fall perfectly into place in the Bush Ranger’s G-10 scales. The scales were a bit sharp read more on the inside when it arrived, which created some hotspots when using the knife without gloves but was easy to fix by rounding the inside edges of the scales. The S35VN steel performs wonderfully. It’s easy to sharpen and stays sharp in the field. I usually just keep it honed by stropping it on my belt with a bit of Tormex. I reground the blade to a sort of “scandi-vex” grind and it performs great for the camp tasks that I use it for. It is a fantastic carving blade now and the pronounced tip is useful for punching precise holes through wood, leather, or canvas. I have carved whistles, deadfalls, stakes, pot hangers, bow drill sets and so many more tools with this knife. It does great with game and food prep as well. I’ve used it to skin and process a few squirrels and fish. The lockup on this knife is stronger than any other folding knife I have used. I could probably use it to baton without issue. The spine is a sharp 90 degrees and throws showers of sparks from a ferro rod. If I only had to choose one folding knife for the rest of my life, this would be the one.

Great knife

This knife is hard to beat for the price, I was worried the scales would be wimpy because its GFN but that’s not the case. I love the grip and steel you get.

Well Designed Knife

The ergonomics on this knife are excellent, the handle is almost like a blend of the best aspects of the Recon 1 and the Counter-Point 1. A flat ground, Bowie style blade in S35VN steel is a phenomenal combination. I own about 10 cold steel folders and this seems to be the strongest, most robust knife without being overkill and cumbersome like some of their other blades.

I read more only have 3 minor critiques with this knife.
-Sticks out a little too much in pocket for my preference.
-Taking it apart for cleaning is a little difficult
-One handed closing is doable without getting cut, but the choil that drops on your index finger is a little sharp.

I first bought the 30$ lite version which is good for the price, but would definitely recommend this instead if you have the extra money. This thing is a serious work and camp blade in a semi-compact package.

Another CS winner

I love this little beast came razor sharp OOTB and has really nice contoured thick G10 scales. It has alot heft for a smaller knife considering I have XXl hands. The opening is very smooth like SR1 and 4max and the Tri-ad lock is solid as expected. My only complaint would be I wish the thumb plate opener was larger like the one on the Immortal it's a little small IMO but otherwise read more a very solid offering from Cold Steel's 2018 line up. I would recommend it to any CS Fanboy like myself or if you want a great hard use smaller folder.
