About Cold Steel Kudu

In South Africa, an inexpensive ring lock folder is sold everywhere. It’s a good design, but it’s constructed from sub-standard materials, is poorly made, and is horribly overpriced. And yet, millions of these Knives are sold there each year. Well, we thought we could do better, in the quality of materials, cutting performance, and in price. The Cold Steel Kudu, takes some cues from its South African competition, but our version is vastly superior. Ours has a 5Cr15MoV Stainless steel flat ground blade, heat tReated to Rc 56-57 for better edge holding ability and ease of re-sharpening, and a thin razor sharp edge. For safety, Cold Steel has thoroughly tested the locking mechanism and are well satisfied it will hold the blade rigidly open until you decide to close it by pulling up on the ring attached to the back spring. The handle of the Kudu also reflects Cold Steel's dediCATion to making an effective and afFordable folder. It’s made of 43% glass reinforced Zytel. This material has proven to be extremely strong, and is stiff enough to complement the blade and spring when locked open. Plus, the gripping surface has a wood grain texture for traction and features an attractive polished steel Kudu horn emblem for a little extra flair! We think the Kudu represents an unbelievable value. It’s ready for anything and makes a wonderful work knife, utility knife, bait knife, or hunting knife.

New EDC

At first I was thinking about getting an okapi knife, which the kudu is modeled after, but ended up choosing this instead. Sturdily built, easily sharpenable, and great for the money. I carry it everywhere now and I love listening to the clicks it makes as it opens.

Co.d Steel Kudu

I was skeptical about the quality of this knife. I was super surprised when I got it! Length is perfect. The blade’s sharpness was scary. The locking mechanism is unique and very secure. I have shown this inexpensive, yet very functional blade to several other knife aficionados and they are as I pressed as I am. Will be ordering a bunch for X-mas stocking stuffers!

Surprisingly Good

I bought this item due to the reputable brand and interesting locking mechanism with no real expectations as far as quality or cutting ability. Out of the box it was shaving sharp which was a major surprise to me. I will say that the handle feels cheap and the locking mechanism is stiff for a while but for an eight dollar knife you really can't expect superb materials.

Great Knife for the Price

You may not be getting a super steel blade or anything fancy, but for a basic yet unique knife this is well worth the $8. Its got a huge blade and a comfortable handle. The fit and finish also surprised me for the price you pay.
I own a modern Okapi, and this knife is better in pretty much every regard. I would suggest swapping the key ring for a normal one because it is a little read more rough on your fingers. Takes a decent enough edge, and will certainly add something neat to your collection.

Size Matters

This knife has been my edc for at least 6 months. Been using it for cutting steak to high griping the handle to smash ice with the butt. The length is good for front jean pocket, but it is better placed with fitted pants. If you "play with your knives" you'll want to swap out the ring with one with rounded sides, the stock ring edges are too sharp. Great price for a great knife. read more It's as cheap as a letter opener, but 20x more useful.

A new favorite cheap EDC.

This knife is intimidating to use at first, but once you spend a few minutes just opening and closing the knife you'll be very happy with it. However, you will need some finger strength. This is an impeccably well made knife for the price. Watch the manufacturer's endurance testing video if you have any doubts. The knife came surprisingly sharp, and feels very good in the hand. read more The handle is grippy yet smooth to the touch. I only have two complaints with the knife; The mirror finish looks terrible if you don't wipe off your finger prints constantly, and the ring that comes with the knife is sharp on the edges. It will make your fingers sore. I quickly replaced it with another one I had lying around. I implore you to find a better bang for your buck. I'm definitely going to get it's bigger brother the Eland.

Great price, for an interesting knife.
One comment in my mind: I have never watched a video that goes in for a full minute or two and shows so little of the knife. You can watch this video all you like and never figure out what the knife looks like! Where is the BladeHQ video that actually SHOWS THE KNIFE, and not just a guy flipping it over ten times making sure you never see read more what it looks like?

Not bad for 6 dollars

For six dollars, it's unbeatable. Mine came very sharp. The steel is not great, but amazing for such a big blade at a 6 dollar price point.
However, the locking mechanism tends to stick as the knife wears in. The steel of the blade is so soft that the lock actually started cutting grooves into the detent, so now it's supper hard to open and when you do, it jerks and Ive ended read more up slicing my hand a few times and I was being very careful. I have owned and used knives since I was a kid. Make sure you keep the locking mechanism well lubricated or else it will start grinding on itself and will cause lock stick, which on this knife means you'll jerk it open and likely cut yourself. I honestly don't care because it's a 6 dollar knife.
If you like the design, sure buy it, but if you're just looking for an inexpensive knife, spend just a few bucks more and get something else. Cold steel has some really cool stuff in just a slightly higher price range. they make good stuff, but at 6 bucks you're really getting more than you paid for, but that's still not much.

You had me at $6.95

I bought this knife on a whim and... it's AWESOME! First of all I give it 5 stars just because it is $7. Maybe I am just easily entertained, but the entertainment value alone is worth $7. This knife is fun to learn how to use. I am not a big fan of Cold Steel knives, but this one impresses me. It has some interesting history too. I have passed over this knife many times - not sure read more of what to expect. I figured for $7 it was finally worth a try. Very sharp - shaving sharp Krupp steel right out of the box. I’m fairly certain I could filet fish with this. I like the full flat grind, buttery smooth ratcheting, and solid CLICK when it locks into place. The Kudu horn inlay is kind of neat too. Hardly any blade play up&down or side to side. I am sorry it took me so long to buy this knife. I have added it to my Wishlist again. Did I mention it was $7. For anyone having trouble with the "ring & lock mechanism" follow the included instructions carefully. I have not had it long enough to put it through its paces, but I already have my money’s worth. Worth sacrificing a $6 burger + cheap dollar store gadget to get this. Worth the price of admission to the Saturday Matinee. Behold the $7 five star knife at BHQ!

I bought this knife on a whim but I didn't like it at all. Not impressed with cold steel quality.

Cool knife

Wow what a knife, I bought this outta curiosity and started carrying it with me working Walmart, and for thicker cardboard this knife did pretty good for what I used it for before I got my cold steel voyager, now my experience with the Krupp stainless is limited and I cant say for performance but my Krupp tanto lite has spots of rust and I oil my blades like an OCD person so I fear read more the kudu will be the same way

Hahahahaha I love this thing as soon as it came in the mail I was giggling! It's huge, it's bigger than my 0452cf! Plus it was ACTUALLY shaving sharp for 7 bucks its a steal, perfect for dirty jobs and sharpening practice. And if you can get it to rust you deserve a medal! Buy a few

I bought 4 cold steel knives for last x-mas and was shocked at how sharp the kudu was. Even sharper than espada. I actually bought 2, one for me and 1 for my daughter. She looked at it and said it was too sharp,so now I have 2. Fantastic deal cant go wrong, but don't give it to a kid. It is an adults knife. Very sharp!! great for jobs around house etc. Be careful when you shut it. read more It's tricky with the ring. Built pretty tuff too.

$7, cheap steel, damn ring. But this is that knife you reach for to do dirty work. Holds a great blade and sturdy. Its a great beater knife that we all should have in our bag or box.
