If something better exists, I'm not aware of it.
The Cold Steel Spartan is my very favorite close quarters fighting folder. The handle is designed for a solid and retentive grip, and the blade for extreme cutting performance, not to mention a tip that penetrates very well. The spine is thick for overall durability, and the edge is very fine due to the deep hollow grind. The recurve blade shape gives the user more sharpened edge… read more than the blade length would suggest, and pulls material into the edge as it moves through. The thumb plate engineered by Andrew Demko is an example of a brilliant design that has been improved and perfected in my opinion. It allows immediate opening upon retrieving the knife from the pocket with very little to no practice necessary (but you should anyway). The overall size is intimidating, but still very manageable compared to many of the other monster folding designs by Cold Steel (they are all great though) and I find it to be optimal for me, as it still leaves room for stuff underneath in the same pocket, and doesn't print like crazy. Cold Steel offers a second pocket clip for left handed users, and the AUS10A blade takes and holds an edge very well, while still being fairly tough and corrosion resistant. The triad lock does require some thumb strength apparently, because I have handed this to friends, and watched them struggle to depress the lock bar to close the knife, but I have no issue operating this knife with one hand. If needed, you can disassemble this knife easily, and adjust the spring to facilitate easier lock operation. I do carry fixed blades frequently, but if I am going to be in a sketchy neighborhood for work or whatever, I carry this knife. Over the years, I have become skilled in a knife combat system that some of you might be familiar with (Mike is the best) and this knife has become a virtual extension of my body. If you are looking to get the absolute best folding knife for combat/defense or heavy work for under 100 dollars, this is the knife I would recommend. I would have gladly paid twice what it costs, and now I will have both a plain edge, and a serrated edge (the only duplicate in my collection) just because. It's worth its weight in gold, and used properly, it will end any life threatening situation in seconds. Just ask Lynn.
