Great Action and under-rated/under-known Kizer Gem

Daniel K.

Highly under-rated knife. The action is great for a front flipper and I like the style. The blade shape is exactly what I like for utility and function. Ergos are pretty good. I have smallish hands and can use the forward choil with my finger. The back portion of the handle has a bit of a hotspot on my pinky when trying to 4 finger grip behind the choil, however. A more rounded read more back of the handle would have fixed that.

The shape in the pocket is fine too, though a bit wider than other knives and the front flipper can get a bit pokey, especially for the bottom of a pocket if not clip carrying. The clip is machined and well done, but a bit stiff. This could get better over time. One of the best things about the clip is the actual placement of the clip, which was well thought out and designed by somebody who has obviously used a lot of frame-lock knives before, especially front-flippers. The placement and size/length of the clip allow for the fingers to grip on that and not the frame-lock, allowing for great grip for deployment without pressing down on the frame-lock portion. This is a very good design.

There is very little hardware at all, with only a very robust pivot, inserted stop pin, and a back screw/spacer at the very end. The design is, again, very simple and well-thought-out. The knife relies upon the scales and the design to provide structural support and integrity of the handle. There are milled portions of the scales to lighten the weight a bit and provide excellent balance, as well as flexibility in the lock bar for the correct spring of the bar and action. There is a chamfered and rounded feel to all of the edges and jimping, and a kind of "weathered" look to the finished in places which is both aesthetically pleasing to me as well as providing a great feel in the hand. There are no hot spots on edges or main used portions of the knife, which is ideal for an EDC type of knife this was designed as. (other than the one spot on the back of the handle I mentioned).

Other features-Have not taken this apart, but appears to have almost "cartridge" style bearings which are incorporated into the large pivot as one of the main portions of the integrity and action of the blade. This design is very smooth and strong, with a well-centered blade and no adjustment needed whatsoever so far. I would imagine it would need to be maintained, but the design is very simple and functional, again. There is a replaceable/removable lock-bar insert and overstep travel portion at the top of the lock bar that functions very well and locks with precision and no stick whatsoever.

The blade steel is S35VN with a very nice blackened stonewash to match the handle. Can't really go wrong with S35 for an EDC-style blade, IMO. Although the blackened/stealth color will probably show more wear than others, it is stonewashed and already is a kind of 'weathered' look overall, so with everyday use, and not extreme hard use, should look fine over time compared to a satin or polished blade. I like the look and think it will 'pocket-patina' well over time.

This knife, IMO, is a very well-designed and under-rated/underexposed gem in Kizer's lineup. I would highly recommend it. The only qualm I have is the back-end curve shape of the handle, but that could just be my hand size. Overall, an excellent, excellent knife and well worth buying to add to a collection, especially for the action and simplicity of design. It really is a great simple design that should stand the test of time.

Better than Feist

The only downfall of this knife is the pocketclip. It's extremely stuff doesn't work well with jeans, it kinda works ok for thin shorts. But the action is much better than the Fiest and has much more grip in the hand as well. Love the blade shape on this guy.

This knife is smaller than you think--- and thinner in the hand. Excellent fit and finish.

Clip is not the best and sits a bit funny in the pocket, but it is small.

Great blade, fun front flipper. Can spidey flick.....
