I handled this blade and I have never handled an OTF that had so many deployment failures! If you want a solid proven OTF go with Microtech! They make a zero fail OTF, I have 5 different models and all are amazing; I can't even say I ever had a issue of any kind

Not your typical SOG

SOG advertises this knife as a solid lockup and no rattle. That is true. However, I have had three of these knives so farthe first one failed to deploy (or retract) about 1 out of ten times. I called SOG warranty and got a replacementIt was WORSE than the first one. It failed to open the very first time I took it out of the box, then continued to fail nearly half the time. The third read more knife I received has only failed to deploy a few times, so I decided to just keep it. If you want a cool knife, that sometimes works and sometimes doesntthen this is the knife for you. If you want a reliable knife that opens EVERY time you push the button, buy a Microtech, Heretic, Hogue or Boker

Could be better

the design itself is great the lock up is better than my infidel but when it is going In and out of the handle it scratches on the sides and cause the blade to become dull. i have had mine for less than a week and i have sharpened it about five times. SOG needs a serious redesign of the internal mechanism

Do Not Buy this Knife

I never write reviews, but this knife's quality can't be ignored.

My example:

- came loose while retracting 10% of the time
- rubbed on the frame creating blade wear
- was extremely dull from the factory
- didn't have an even grind

Buy Microtech, Guardian Tactical, Heretic or Hogue

Not worth the SOG name.

Note: I have collected knives (including many SOGs) for over 30 years and, know a lot about them!

I purchased this knife on the day it became available to the general public.
Right out of its package I noticed spots of dullness on portions of the blade. As I operated the action a few times, I observed the dull spots getting larger.
While this is normal on Asian built, read more "self dulling" OTF knock-offs, it is certainly not acceptable on a USA made $350 knife. The lockup WAS tighter than my Microtech, Benchmade and Guardian OTFs, though not tighter than my Deadlock but; the price of that sturdy-ness is a damaged blade edge.

Either I got one that slipped past SOG's QC or, the design is flawed; either way- Shame on You SOG!

I will say in defense of Blade HQ, they allowed me to return the knife with very little fuss.

Good OTF, maybe not the best for the price.

Really good action and solid construction. Little on the heavy side. It would be more competitive at a $300 price, but I dont regret buying it for $350.

Excellent design, but has some serious issues

Hello everyone.
I ll try to be short
If my job was to stub people with a knife, I would choose this knife. It has excellent ergonomics for combat purpose. The knife jumps from one hand to another a lot of different way to hold it.
Disadvantages:
- the blade got stuck 3 times in open position!!!! To retract the blade you need to hold and slightly push down the blade read more without using a button.
- blade edge had a serious damage on both sides coming from the box!!!!
Overall good knife. I presume it will get better some time in the future when sog will fix all this problems
Cheers,
Semyon

Highly Inconsistent Quality Control

So, I have had many issues with this knife. I first noticed that wear marks appeared on both sides of the fuller simply from opening and closing the knife. The lock up was solid and the action was fairly good, not as strong as a microtech but better than an Infidel. However, as I continued to play with the knife the wear marks started to lengthen and completely wear through the read more blade's coating. Shortly after, the knife completely failed to deploy at all. I do not mean that it would partially deploy and I had to pull the blade to engage the lock (per SOG's instructions). No, the blade did not leave the handle at all. I contacted SOG's warranty department, and got a replacement knife. Unlike the first the new knife does not have the same solid lock up, it has noticeable side to side play and has already started developing wear marks on the blade. I have contacted SOG again to try to resolve this as it is possible that I got unlucky twice. Overall the experience has greatly reduced my confidence in the knife. I will update this review if I actually get a functioning knife at some point.

Big flaw resolved

So when I first bought this knife it had a major issue with dulling as the blade was retracted, SOG has fixed the issue. I sent it in for a third time and a replacement was sent my way. The knife locks up Rock solid and the blade has no dulling when the knife opens or closes on either egde. It is fixed, so if you have one and it has this issue just tell SOG and return the knife, read more they'll replace it for free and if you're skeptical about buying it I can assure you it's no longer an issue. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was because of the previous issues and the fact it came with a not so great edge.

I was very excited to get this one because of its features. First thing I noticed was it is very heavy. Maybe I got a prototype made of zinc. It is heavier than it looks for sure. Second thing is mine actually rattles closed. I thought that was one of their selling points? No rattling blade in or out. It is ergonomic and looks really cool. The action reminds me of one of those Harkins read more Tritons. Considering returning since it is a high price point and doesnt do what they said it does.

I want to do a video review on the knife as words are just words. Let me tell you the lock up is superb it does have the slightest rattle when closed but thats probably the mechanism. The knife will not move. To address some issues it will fail to fire if not fully pushed up as the mechanics has a piece that looks like a chamber indicator that stabilizes the blade and if not depressed read more will lock the knife into place. After a quick push up and down the knife will unlock if this happens. I put it next to an infidel and verspa knife and measures so close to length you wont miss blade. If youre on the fence on this one do it. Stop thinking just do it. Sog is impeccable with sharpening services and will replace parts or repair for lifetime of ownership. If I had to pick benchmade or SOG this is da way.

Blade can only be retracted using 2 hands

I bought this knife with the expectation I would use it as a frequently carried knife. I liked the idea of no blade wobble when the blade is retracted and no blade play when the blade is extended. It performs pretty much as advertised in those aspects. The blade is not too hard to extend. However when trying to retract the blade a lot of force had to be applied and almost always read more I had to use both hands as the force I was able to apply with one thumb was not enough. I also noted that when the blade was extended if you pull the blade slightly it appears to lock in place as if it had not completely locked in place. I tried calling SOG got their answering machine and left a message and they never called me back. I also sent a e mail and did not receive a response. Fortunately Blade HQ agreed to take the knife back. I know this may not be a fair comparison, but I have a G&G deadlock and the quality difference are significant. It may not be a fair comparison as the deadlock cost 3 times the amount of money. However the extension and retraction of the deadlock blade is so smooth with springs with similar tension throughout the range. Also the lockup is better with the deadlock. Even though I like the deadlock in my opinion it is too expensive to every day carry. Even with the problem with the knife I am hoping that I just got a knife with springs that were too strong and will consider purchasing another Pentagon OTF in hopes it works better.

My new OTF EDC

Waited months for this release. When I saw a chance to have one a couple of months early I didn't hesitate. SOG just raised the bar on OTF in and out snap. The knife is as advertised. No play, no wobble, no shake, rattle, or clatter.
I am glad to have one in my collection, all things considered, it is worth it.

Seeing is believing!

I will probably make a full video review of this knife on YouTube but long story short is that read the other review on this item and it says it all. SOG is really raising the bar for OTF knives with this one: excellent price point, nearly perfect lockup, looks great, feels great in the hand, and really excellent craftsmanship and quality. Just to note which isnt a con for me but read more maybe for some it does come in between 7-8 ozs so a bit heavier than an average OTF but the action is very smooth and addictive and overall a must have for any OTF enthusiast.

A gamble I am glad I took.

It felt like a massive gamble buying this, with no video's of anyone besides the CEO of SOG talking about it. Let me tell you, the hype is all real. I own 10 high end OTF's from Microtech, Benchmade, Brian Tighe, Guardian Tactical, and now this SOG Pentagon. The lockup is 99.99% on this knife! It has not failed to fire or retract yet. Granted it has only been a day so far. I was read more a little worried that this knife would disappoint me, but the total opposite happened! This is a quality, solid knife! If you are reading this... BUY IT NOW! You will love it. I haven't handled a G&G Hawk Deadlock yet, so that is why I say 99.99% lockup on the SOG! I am amazed that they are bringing a knife this good, at the $350-400 dollar price point. This knife feel's like it should cost 2x the price. Really, it is that good!
