Built Like A Tank

This is my first SOG knife. I'm very impressed with it. I love the smooth movement due to the bearings. It's built very well and the lockup after deployment is the tightest I've ever seen in a knife. Absolutely no movement whatsoever in any direction, even side to side. This knife should last the rest of my life as well as my son's when I pass it down to him.

Love the XR read more lock which makes this knife very easy to both open and close with one hand.

My only complaint is the edge on the blade. It is sharp, but the edge will need a little honing because it's very noticeably uneven which affects cutting, but only a little. I almost gave it 4 instead of 5 stars because of this, but it's easily fixed. I certainly wouldn't let that keep you from getting one of these superbly made knives. I am very happy with it and highly recommend it to anyone who likes knives.

Fits my large hands and well built. Gave it 4 stars because it had a bur and wouldn't flip open. After oiling and forcing open and breaking in, it works great.

Before I bought this knife girls never talked to me. My boss would disrespect me. Since I’ve been carrying the SOG Seal XR my life has turned around. This is the manliest knife on God’s green earth. I now have a wife and 12 kids. My career is on fire. Women want me, men want to be me. My boss doesn’t ask me to work extra hours with no overtime. I’m the boss now.

The read more blade is razor-sharp. The rough jimping is perfect. A pet peeve of mine is a knife slipping out of purchase while doing work and having to rearrange my grip. Not so here. Also fits great if you’re wearing gloves. Nice little “persuasion tool” on the bottom of the handle too. The locking mechanism and flipper are awesome. Screams overbuilt. 10/10

I finally have it after almost 2 years on my to buy list! What an excellent knife! Well done SOG!
The ergonomics are great.
Fit and finish is perfect, including blade centering.
Very sharp out of box.
The action is outstanding.
I have several hard use/tactical blades from many knife makers and this is now one of my favorites. Well worth the price.

Big. Beefy. Beautiful. Balanced. Buy It!!!

Bought this knife over a year ago and has been my go to for EDC for almost the entire year. Had a few in the rotation. Socom. Civivi. Gerber 06 Military version. TwoSun and various OTFs/manuals. All different weights and sizes and the SOG XR is my go to. Yes it’s beefy. Has noticeable weight in your pocket but does carry very well for me. I don’t mind a big EDC as long as it’s read more great materials that can handle all the things. This one fits the bill and I assure you that if you get this one you won’t be disappointed. Over the year it has very little wear and I haven’t even had to sharpen or strope it once. Still riding factory blade and so far this blade has not let me down. Everything is perfect with this one. I eyeballed this guy for about 3-6 months before even buying. Watched countless videos/etc. don’t waste your time like I did. Get it playa!!!

I’ve been carrying this bad boy for about a month now. And it never fails to impress me. Very fast to open. Speed kills? One day it just might save your life. Gives you several open options. Big folder? I also carry a TOPS 747 MAGNUM. I like big folders. This one might become your favorite. I hope this helps. Jef C.

Matches up well to the SR1

I have this knife along with the cold steel sr1 tanto and I think the Seal xr is better in most areas. Fit and finish is superb, there are MANY way to deploy the blade, and the blade itself is highly durable as well as being a remarkable slicer.

Initial Impressions

Just received this big folder and I’m impressed. Have had a TAC XR for about a month now and like it so much I wanted to pick up this beast.
Must say that SOG has been really knocking them out of the park recently after some quiet years.
The QC seems to be spot on with tight tolerances, no rattling, blade dead centered without any movement at all when opened.
The big read more blade flies out with three options for opening. There’s the kicker (flipper tab), large opening hole on blade, and you can use the xr lock and a flick of the wrist. The blade itself is razor sharp right out of the box.
This is a big beefy folder and blade stock, and with all the aggressive jimping stays fixed in your hand. Also, easy to use with gloves on; which you’re likely to need with long and heavy work because of all the jimping.
Have a bunch of high end knives and this is my third SOG, and if they keep things up not likely to be the last.

Beefy folding do anything knife

Let's get this out of the way: it's a little heavy.

I say "a little" because it is balanced so well and the ergonomics of the grip are so good that the weight doesn't get in the way when it's in the hand.

The action is crazy smooth. The flipper has enough resistance that as soon as you overcome it, it flips right out. If you pull the lock, you can just move your read more hand and the blade swings right out. Unlock and and swing it back just as easily, all one handed. I bet you could do this with gloves on!

I love the tip on the clip point. A pointy tip is important to me to get a cut started, dig out a splinter, and other fine work, so a fine point has to deal with being delicate. This knife has a fine point and is anything but delicate.

The pocket clip is terrific. Being able to get the clip to engage with my pocket one handed without looking at it is a major grading point of any pocket knife, especially if you're paying big money, and this one is a definite pass.

Even with its size it's manageable in the pocket. Again, the ergonomics are almost weird how well it is designed to make you worry less about the size.

I compare it to my Cold Steel SR1. Overall it feels lighter even though it's a full ounce heavier. The Cold Steel gives you a "chunky" tough feel, but side by side the SOG has a thicker back and thinner taper and tip.

Factory edge is hair popping sharp. The handle material has a great grip and it has jimping on every surface available. Last part to notice is the metal pummel on the bottom that is VERY solid and tough.

Oh hey, look: a HUGE chunk of CPM-S35VN with detailed engineering made in the USA at $170!!!

Buy this knife and carry it when you're not at work. Get a small spyderco, benchmade, or ZT for when you are, and that can be your whole knife setup. OK, realistically just have a whole knife collection and love it when it comes up in your rotation.

I have knives I like, knives I love, and knives that completely surprised me and surprise me every time I take them out, literally two (maybe three) out of a few dozen. This is one of them!

Superb knife

Not a SOG fan but this one is worth every penny and exceeds expectations. As good as any $200 ZT or Benchmade. The design, size, heft, and locking mechanism is top notch. One of my absolute favs. Stop wasting time reading this review and just order the damn thing!

Great knife!

Saw this knife profiled on the SOG Knife Banter a few weeks ago. Exactly what I was looking for as an EDC knife. This is well designed and built. Opening and closing are a breeze and done easily with one hand. The XR lock is solid. The ergonomics of the handle and the FRN (fiberglass reinforced nylon) handle material work well in my hand. Easy to retain the knife in the hand and read more do big cuts like cardboard boxes as well as small trim jobs. The gimping on the blade really help for the small cut jobs. Who can argue with S35VN steel. Fits well in the pocket. I am lukewarm on the strike pummel, but that feature is in keeping with the tactical nature of the knife. I thought it might be heavy in the pocket but after carrying for a week not so. In addition to its high quality design, construction, and functionality, its just a cool looking knife. Glad I purchased it.

Heavy Duty...

This thing is a hefty beast of a knife. It closes with one hand as smooth as it opens using the SR locking mechanism switch. Very heavy, but built really solid. The jimping all around the handle locks the knife in your hand but not so rough to cause any hot spots. Feeling the quality of this knife in my hand makes me wonder which SOG XR is next on my list...

Wow, real quality

The craftsmanship of this knife is hands down up there with any high dollar flipper available.Well worth the money. This thing is solid as a tank and comes very sharp. Action is the smoothest of any knife I own. My new favorite blade in my collection by far.

Best offering from SOG

I have had this knife for a bit and i absolutely love this knife. The flipper action on the XR lock makes me wonder why Benchmade can't deliver a great flipper for their axis lock. Very durable and it fills the hands a little better than my Cold Steel Recon. The factory grind came even and sharp out of the box and was perfectly centered. I highly recommend this knife for tough tasks read more like cutting coax lines.
