NOT just “a good knife for non knife people”

TIMOTHY F.

Before pulling the trigger on this knife I saw a bunch of comments from “knife people” on YouTube and Reddit saying this was too vanilla, not interesting enough, a good knife for non-knife people. I beg to differ. I have a pretty good knife collection from all the big brands, I have some expensive knives costing many times more than this Banter. This knife is kick ass. It feels read more so solid, the action is fantastic, it’s so snappy and satisfying. The fit and finish are superb. The blade came razor sharp and remains so after a week of use. It’s a pleasure to use, love the blade shape. It’s a pleasure just to hold it. I am a huge fan of this knife.

I kept reading the reviews on this knife and I have a lot of EDC options but decided to go for it. Quite possibly the best action I have ever flipped and I have ZT, Benchmade, Spyderco, Civivi and several other quality blades…and I’m a sucker for the BHQ natural G10 scales. I have more expensive knives but my sweet spot is for flippers…but this one if you are on the fence read more just do it!

Catch it fast

Walker T.

I KILLS me to do this review, but… this has to be a 1 star review so that WE Knives can catch this FAST. I’ve purchased 9 WE/CIVIVI’s over the course of a year. This is the very first one that did not come perfect from the factory. The blade was off center and this thing was DRY as a bone… I 100% had to take it apart, clean it, and get some lube in there. Upon my disassembly, read more I see the worst thing I could have seen. A stamped out liner (as expected) with a second false strike on the liner by accident. This left 100 tiny dents in the shape of half a liner, off center to the actual liner… have you ever seen a 25 cent quarter mispunched? Or sent a piece of paper through a copier to find out that your copy is crooked? This is what it looked like… ugly as can be. I am mostly ok with this because it is cosmetic and you cannot see it when it is closed so I will keep the knife and not get a refund. What I am afraid of is that this is some sort of downfall to WE Knives’ “perfect fit and finish” reputation. Things fall through the cracks once in a while. That’s expected, but please BEWARE.

A true EDC

This is a true EDC, appropriate for many task. Perfect size for me; I wear a medium Glove. Feels great in the hand and the materials feel quality, Smooth flick to open with a smooth close, feels great in the pocket with the deep clip. This knife is very well thought out. This knife also came with a small zipper case and a cloth to clean the knife with. Very impressed and stoked read more to own one of these.

This is one of my all time favorite knives. It's a nice size, comfortable grip, excellent blade centering, deep carry, decently customizable.

We knives co. Has always made quality knives, and this is no exception. Great buy, 10/10, couldn't recommend more.

Beyond impressed

I bought this knife because I was a huge fan of the ergos and action of the baby banter from civivi. This knife is just fantastic. The action is amazing, the G10 is super grippy, everything about this knife is well done. The blade steel is remarkable for the price. I think anyone would be happy to add this to their collection. Civivi and WE have certainly made a fan out of me. I’m read more hoping they do a baby banter in a premium blade steel because I love that design as well. 10/10 highly recommend, there is not a lot of knives that compete for the money

Great buy, love the grip and blade for everyday tasks. This knife is easy 1 of 3 in my wife's carry rotation

Why did I wait so long to buy this knife?

Robert B.

I should have purchased this knife a long time ago. It's as good as everyone says and then some. Fit and finish is excellent and, with S35VN steel this is a great value. This is a knife I would have no problem handing to a non-knife person and impressing them with both the functionality and quality.

Only Lacking Aesthetically

Justin T.

Just picked this up during cyber week and have handled it for a few hours.

Fit and finish seem on point with the other WE and Civivi knives I own. Solid build quality, great centering, and a great edge.

My only complaint is with the blue thumb studs. They are not even close to matching the vibrancy that's in the picture. Much lighter blue and they do not "pop" at all.

A read more minor complaint, but if not for that I'd give this blade 5 stars so far.

Finds it's way into my pocket

ROBERT S.

This knife finds it's way into my pocket again and again. It's not super flashy, but everything is well done. The lines on the knife are very attractive. The G-10 handle feels really solid and has a nice grippy texture on it. All the edges are smooth and appropriately de-burred. The pocket clip has nice retention and allows for deep carry without getting hung up in any way when read more removing the knife. The knife took a little oil and tuning to really fly open. Lockup is really solid with no blade play in either rotation axis. The knife is pretty darn lightweight for how solid it is. The only nock against the knife is the lock bar is a little bit stiffer and hidden than some knives and can be difficult to unlock a deployed knife if you have gloves on. I still give the knife 5 stars because so many things are done right.

This is the intro cost knife for We Knife Co, but don’t let the affordable price tag fool you. This knife singularly convinced me this is one of the best companies in the knife business today.

The action is like butter, the blade is sharp as a razor. From my experience, they are an industry leader in both regards by a long margin. It also has a solid liner lock. I own read more Ultratechs, Benchmade, Spyderco, along with CRKT, Gerber, and Kershaw knives - most of the major brands competing in the market - and I’d take this little thing over most other knives in my collection most days. It and its black counterpart haven’t left my pocket and they will be my EDC of choice for the foreseeable future.

WE Knife Co makes a special product. It is made with high-quality material, expert craftsmanship, functional and aesthetic design. If you’re reading this review buy this knife!

Good solid little knife

I haven`t bought a new knife in maybe 25 years and got the bug for one. After a lot of looking, I finally settled on this one for EDC. First off it is built tight, I like that because it means as it wears in it will stay tight but smooth. It came a little dry, so it got some light oil and a small adjustment to alignment. It has already been operated several hundred times and will read more do so in the evenings for a week or so. After a week of oiling/operating, I`ll take it apart and clean it thoroughly, lightly oil it once more and I`m sure this is going to be a wonderful little knife. The color is not as white/clear as I thought it would be, and the green is a beautiful shade. My wedding ring is made of Jade so they are nearly a perfect match. This would make almost anybody a fine EDC knife that they would also be proud to show to others. Good choice for me.

Excellent Knife

Heavier than my other Banter by about .5oz with a thicker blade. Action wasn't quite as smooth but we're really splitting hairs here because it's still great. A small shot of oil and the action took off. Highly recommend.

Great Knife!

Love the knife overall. Great size and action. All star materials used. Only gripe is that the liner lock is a bit uncomfortable to use; almost sharp. If it wasn’t coated black, I would look to file the teeth down. Stops you from you constantly opening and closing it, I guess (no fidget guarantee!).

Love the knife. Super smooth action, very sharp out of the box, very well built. My only disappointment was that it was very pale in color. I was expecting more of a Jade green than the pale green Jade i got. Still love the knife just not as shown here.

Super happy with this purchase. I think this is the best EDC knife 108 dollars can buy. Sub 3 inch S35VN blade with G10 handles and deep carry pocket clip, all in nice minimal design for $108. Love the snappy action and the grippy G10. I've purchased multiple G10 knives recently and they're all too smooth, but the G10 on this knife is perfect, it's grippy and exactly what I expected read more G10 to feel like.

Very happy with this EDC. I finally have found a knife that can compete with my Benchmade Mini Freek Limited Edition. Plus it’s cheaper then the 565 special edition. This WE Banter comes with a centered, gimped, thick, insanely sharp CPM20CV(YES CPM20CV) steel. Just the right length for everyday cuts. For the price it smashes the Bugout. Better steel, thicker and better handle read more materials than Bugout. I’m a Benchmade guy. But I have to give credit where credit is due. The Natural G-10 handle feels and fits perfect in my hand. The scales are super thick and feel sturdy when deploying blade. I love the perfect weight of the Banter. The sound and smooth action is satisfying. Did I mention it has a deep carry pocket clip? Lol The deep carry pocket clip is very nice. I love this knife and for the price you have to collect 1 too. Thank you HQ I will be carrying it a lot. Sorry Benchmade.

Cannot get this high of a quality for such low pricing anywhere else

i leave reviews once in a blue moon because i am not impressed easily. well, at least not enough for me to leave a review for some product. but i recently got into EDC pocket knives and have been watching all sorts of bladeHQ videos on youtube, which are great and informational. i started to add a bunch of knives that fit my interests onto my wishlist on this website but couldn't read more bring myself to check out even one of them (included para3, bugout, bailout, yojimbo2). however, when i saw this, its s35vn steel blade, g-10 scales, AND IT'S EXTREMELY LOW PRICE, i knew i had to pick one up. i don't want people to think that i'm carrying around a deadly weapon so i was leaning towards smaller knives as well.

the banter just melts into the pocket and you forget it is even there until you need it (i thought i had lost it but i found it in my pocket a couple days later because i had forgotten about it since it's so light weight). it has a very satisfying click sound when opening and the hidden liner lock is an extremely nice touch to the aesthetics of the knife. the blade length is perfect for me, which definitely passes Ben's, the designer of the knife, finger test for a knife's blade length (blade being shorter than index finger when holding knife in a natural position). AND a deep carry pocket clip? please, count me in. Ben is a former bladeHQ staff member who appears on many of bhq's older videos. i am confident this knife will last me a long time, knowing that someone so knowledgeable about EDC pocket knives designed this perfect knife.

overall, very reasonably priced for such high quality products. oh, and i should mention its fidgeting factor. being on zoom university, i've been stuck at home on class, busy listening to lectures and flipping the hell out of this thing. thanks ben and thank you we knives!

i don't know much about steel grades but from what i understand s35vn is a better version of the most widely used, well rounded knife steels out there, s30v. if WE knives comes out with this exact knife but ultra premium steel, such as m4 or s90v i will immediately cop.

Incredibly happy with my purchase. Spent a lot of time researching knives online. And this one caught my eye. I loved the murdered out, compact and minimal design. Some people call it boring, but I think it looks plain awesome. Great fidget factor, awesome deep carry clip. Overall, I would recommend this knife to anyone as an EDC, especially if you're new to the knife game like read more me, you can't go wrong with this.

No Idea Why I Slept On This

Philip M.

Normally, my reviews carry quite a bit of detail, but I'll save you some reading this time around.

This knife is a little on the plain (or boring?) side, and does everything it's supposed to do, while remaining compact and good looking. If that's what you're looking for in a knife, it's definitely worth the money.

I should have gotten one sooner, but I let the price read more tag play too much into the decision. You won't regret it, if you do decide to purchase one.

One of the Best EDC Knives

This knife is incredible for your everyday tasks. It's made out of premium materials and can take a beating. Two things I would love to see in a new version of it would be a flipper tab and a thumb stud that would stay blue for longer. I've had the Knife for over a month now and the blue of the thumb stub and now faded to more of a gray with a blue accent. Overall, this knife is read more awesome, it's made out of premium materials and is only 100 Dollars.

My Favorite Knife

Jacob S.

This knife seems worth every penny to me. I mostly love the design but Ben didn't just put form over function. Sharpening choil, relatively thin grind, surprisingly good ergonomics, smooth action, good pocket clip with recessed screws.
My knife came with great quality control, perfect blade centering, no blemishes on the blade finish, no blade play, good detent strength, 50% read more lockup when deployed and locks up consistently every time even on lighter openings.
I've tried scratching the stone wash finish with my keys and it doesn't scratch very easily.

Form, Finish and Fidget Factor are 100%

My first WE Banter was the BladeHQ 20CV exclusive in Jade G-10 around the holidays. I'm not a fan of the Jade, but I love all of my 20CV blades.

Once I got the knife, I was hooked. Ben designed a great knife ... or should I say Knaf. Like others, my first impression was that the knife was a bit plain. It is. You cannot escape that fact, but it is really well done.

I read more like smaller knives, but I have a larger than average hand size. The handles fit the hand nicely, the blade is sturdy, yet slicy and the lockup is firm. Also, even though I prefer smaller blades for EDC purposes, I need a workhorse. I'm a desk jockey during the weekdays, but I also work outside a lot hunting, yardwork and helping on the family farm. I need a small work hard, play hard knife. This is it.

My only knock on the entire design is that I wish the show side scale was just ever so slightly more scalloped to allow for better purchase on the liner lock. Sometimes it is just not available enough for one-handed operation on the close.

Those are general impressions about the Banter. Now, let's talk about this knife.

The S35VN blade came super sharp right out of the box. WE and CIVIVI simply have one of the best factory edges. There is no escaping that. It is perfect, and it it is like my other WE Banter, I believe it is a 20 degree cutting edge.

The drop point blade finish shows the grind or milling marks but is still shiny, and the pocket clip is polished. The G-10 is a nice medium gray. It could definitely fit into an office environment if needed.

Compared to my other WE Banter, I think the detent and deployment are very similar. The thickness of the blade and handle are slightly narrower. I only know that from reading the specs, but what I noticed is the liner lock does seem to offer a bit easier one handed operation, which is either a model difference or a slight improvement from WE.

There is a ton of fidget factor with this knife. It would have been awesome with more of an ambi axis-style lock, but I get why they didn't from a cost standpoint. Either way, this is still fun. Get one. I do not think you'll be disappointed.

Love It!

I agree with all the reviews of this knife. There is nothing negative I can say about it! It's nicely designed and is perfect for every day carry. The clip itself is kind of cool also. Part of the clip has a rectangular cut out exposing the two screws which hold the clip on to the case! This is just one of the small details that were put into this knife which in my opinion really read more looks great! Without a doubt, I would buy this knife again! Right now it is one of my favorite knives in my collection!

EDC Perfection (of the smaller/lighter variety)

STEVEN G.

Right out of the box, the Banter is amazing.

It's super snappy and SHARP!!!

The opening action is mind-blowing. Do they even make autos this fast?

Super lightweight but furiously fast deployment.

For some knives, you can tell that the blade only swings open because of the weight of the blade.

For some knives, you can feel the heavy detent that read more builds up the energy needed to fling open the blade.

But the Banter, you barely have to touch and it--seemingly magically--flies open. Again, AMAZING!!!

For a medium/large hand, I get a 3-and-1/2-finger grip.

The jimping on the spine is barely noticeable until you dig in and add some pressure with your thumb. Then, you quickly notice the traction.

The jimping is subtle, but you can feel the difference along the spine where the thumb easily slides up and down on the smooth portion--even with digging in and adding pressure.

Did I mention SHARP?!?!!
It's sooooooo slicey.
I got the scar to prove it. D'oh!

I'm digging the black on black, but I really like that splash of blue with the thumb stud. And while it's a minor detail, it's still enough to break the monotony of the always popular blackout look.

Simplicity and functionality must've been the driving forces behind this design.

It's classic, yet elegant. It's casual, yet sophisticated. Hell, this could easily be considered a gentleman's carry just as much as an EDC beater.

While there's nothing fancy that stands out about this knife, it still stands out from the rest.

If you want a reliable EDC, make the Banter a part of your collection.

Enjoy the slice!

Another Banter, yes please!

Love the Natural G10 with the Black SW Blade. Amazing action just as in the original design. I enjoy the thicker blade stock with the 20CV steel just to make justifying buying another knife to the wife easier :D.

All in all 10/10 just as in the original version. Spear point, lightning action, deep carry clip with recessed clip and screws and under 3 inches for those with read more laws that regulate that.

Ben, keep up the great work!

Great, but heavier and thicker than original.

David K.

This is a great blade and I love the look and feel of the natural G-10 and the 20CV upgrade. However, I immediately noticed that it was considerably thicker and heavier than its original Banter counterpart (one of my favorite knives). The thicker 20CV blade also makes the action a bit rougher and slower. Still an all-around a great knife. But if the sleek, compact, and light design read more is what attracted you to the original Banter (like me), this may not me be the knife for you.

Highly Functional EDC

Full disclosure, this is my second Banter purchase. I've got to hand it to Ben, he designed a handy little knife. The action on this thing is very fast (ball bearings instead of washers). As a desk jockey I found this knife to be highly functional for most tasks that I typically need a pocket knife for, such as cutting boxes, cutting fruit, and slicing frozen lunch packaging. I read more have also been using this in the garden to harvest some items. It has decent edge retention and isn't very noticeable in an office setting. I like the black with the blue of my first knife, but the blade coating always looked dirty whenever it got the smallest amount of gunk on it. The plain blade should be better with that, and the blue and silver looks nice also. My only complaint is that I have issues closing a liner lock one handed. Since this is my second Banter, I guess that wasn't as much of a deal breaker as I thought it would be, given the other great qualities of this knife.

Wow!!!

I own this and the Benchmade Bugout Mini.

Joseph A.

This is a superior knife by far.
Opening and closing the Banter feel more satisfying by far. The caged ceramic ball bearing pivot action is just smoother than the phosphor bronze washers on the Bugout Mini.
In hand the Banter feels better balanced. I have medium sized hands and I can get a full 4 finger grip on both but it just feels better to work with the Banter.
From read more the factory the Banter came sharper than the Bugout Mini as well.
Kind of like how Doug Ritter's RSK-mk1-g2 is a better version of the the current run of Griptilians, WE knives made something better than than the Bugout Mini.
If you look at Ben Peterson's drawings of the prototype on his blog and saw how he begged for a Bugout Mini for years he had an axis lock type mechanism on his prototype. I'm glad WE Knives convinced him to agree to moving away from the axis-type lock on his personal branded knife.
The liner lock on Banter is easy to release and when it locks up it looks like a nice 40%'ish lockup which is more reassuring for harder tasks (that you could reasonably expect from a knife this size).
If you're mulling a choice between the Bugout Mini and the Banter, choose the Banter.

Great value, not perfect

First off, other than the knife you also get a zipper case and a cleaning cloth. It's always nice to get extras.

But there is one things that I can't let you get that last star. I don't know what it is, but I seem to half open this knife while it's in my pocket and I need to use that pocket for something other than the knife. I haven't has this problem with other knifes with read more thumb stud only but it happens here so it is what it is.

Other than that, great knife and you get a ton for what you are paying for. I wish it was a little less angular, and came with some options in handle material. Great job Ben.

I was pretty stoked to see Ben design his own ideal every day knife. I have to say he did incredibly well, and WE really did a great job executing his vision. The fit and finish is top notch, great contouring on the G10, the action is great and mine flicks open super smooth and drop shuts with ease. The blade centering is also spot on as well. Great little knife.

Like GoldiLocks Says; Juuust Right

Scott N.

Like many people who have watched Blade Banter it was exciting to see Ben's knife released. I chose the black/black option. It's small size is deceiving. The action is really smooth, comes very sharp and feels good in the hand. The drop point/spear point is less threatening looking even being all blacked out. This is my first S35VN blade. So far quite impressed. The G-10 is nicely read more contoured and well finished. The knife disappears when clipped to your pocket. I like the pop of color the blue thumb stud gives. The WIUG is subtle but a nice homage. Normally I like satin blades but the black blade hides the slick grinding to the blade. Wish it was made in the USA but that's a small concession for an overall well made and functional knife. If you get the chance try one out, they sell out fast.

Incredible value!

There was a ton of hype over these knives and often highly praised items come up pretty underwhelming.
This knife lives up to it. Unbelievable value for the money.
Great size for every day carry. Great ergos. Great looks.
The pocket clip could be a bit more substantial in my opinion, but that's personal preference as the stock clip performs well.
Definitely recommend read more picking one up if you've got interst.

This is my second WE knife. Got it today in the mail and it is definitely going to get a lot of pocket time. The size is perfect and it opens like silk right out of the box. I love the weight and how discreet the color scheme is. Just Fantastic !!!!

The Banter is a great little edc knife. Good size and high quality steel you can't really ask for much more. Smooth action and overall great WE Knives quality. Ben did a great job designing this, very simplistic and clean design.

I have a collection of some more expensive knives, but this one is one I find carrying more and more. I love the pop of blue on the thumb stud. The black blade itself is why I choose the black over the blue version of this knife. I enjoy the blade's texture, it is very smooth and does not show any print or grease marks when touched. The action is great with the thumb stud, and flies read more open when you flick it with your thumb or middle finger. I am considering buying the blue one!

Banter is awesome!

I have received my WE Banter in Ben Blue and have to say that it is awesome! Very surprised how well it works and the quality of it for this price. I have a large collection of knives much higher priced than the Banter, however it finds its way to my pocket a good amount of the time. The size is perfect for summer, being small and light. I would highly recomment and am waiting for read more the Black model to come into stock for a second order!

Got this last week and it hasn't left my pocket. Except to use it, of course. Stout little blade, lightening-quick deployment and drop shut out of the box!

Get it.

One of my all time favorite knives so far. The action is so smooth and the blade came super super sharp. Great deal for Under $130 for this knife

What a great, simple, well-built knife. You can tell Ben put a lot of thought into this (recessed pocket clip screws, S35VN steel, deep carry pocket clip, etc.). The fit and finish are top-notch - centering was dead on, the action was super smooth, liner lock is easy to close, textured G-10 makes it easy to grip...just great! I think there could have been just a tad more gimping read more on the spine up past the thumb studs but that's just me.

Great little knife!

Ben did a great job. The knife is simplicity and synergy at its best. The blade stock is thin enough to actually slice things and with a touch of lube on the detent, the action is butter smooth and punches above its price point.

Here it is!

This knife looks great. I really like it, however I feel it is a bit small. My hands are medium sized, yet this knife gets lost in my hands... If it was just a bit bigger, it would be perfect.

One of the best EDC blades I own

After watching Ben's videos for quite some time, I knew that I would have to pickup his first entry into the world of blade design. I also have been wanting to add a WE to my collection so this was like two birds with one stone! The blade itself is on the small side (not a bad thing). The size in addition to the really well executed deep carry clip makes this thing a dream for a read more relatively incognito EDC blade. My only gripe is that it was a little stiff out of the box. After fidgeting with it for a few hours it loosened up considerably. Since then I disassembled the whole thing and threw some oil on the bearing and now it is like butter. The liner lock is still a little too stiff for my preference, but that is literally the only negative thing I have to say about this blade.

Nice Little Knife

There is a lot to love about this little knife, but it could use a few minor improvements. The action is smooth and super snappy. When I first opened the knife I thought that it might be spring assist, but no, just sooper smooth. It's also super sharp straight out of the box. The deep carry pocket clip is quite strong. I wasn't super happy that I had to slightly bend the clip to read more be able to get it to clip to my pant pocket. There is jimping on the back of the blade just below the thumb stud, but this is about 1.5-inches too low on the blade to be useful. It would be really nice if there was some additional jimping about an inch back from the tip. I'm also not a fan of liner locks, but that is a personal preference. All that said, I can see this knife sticking around in my regular rotation for quite a while.

Hard not to Handle

The fit and finish on the Banter is great. Occasionally I need to slightly tighten the pivot to get blade center after opening and closing a lot thru the week. I just find this is always in my pocket for all the small cutting task I do thru the day.

This is a pretty wicked blade, where the hype matches it's utility. The ergonomics are just right, it fits in your hand like a glove. Its opening action is fast and smooth, with solid lockup and no lock stick. And don't get me started on the sharpness and cutting abilities. Woooooo buddy it glides through anything you cut, cardboard, food, paper, fruits, kimchee. Whatever you cut, read more it will do so with grace and ease. I highly recommend this budget friendly knife. Best Damn Edc knife money can buy without breaking the bank.

This knife lives up to the hype for sure. Beautiful, simple design. Buttery smooth action out of the box. Awesome deep carry clip. Honestly haven't found a single thing about this knife I don't like yet. Will pick up a blue one when I can.

The more I carry the Banter the more it grows on me. When I first opened it I was a little disappointed with the thickness of the handles versus the overall length, but I've come to really appreciate the added ergonomics the thickness gives the knife.
The action really surprised me out of the box, usually blades this short don't have enough mass to sling open this smoothly but read more it definitely impressed me. Pocket clip suites the knife perfectly and I dig the flush fit screws. The thumb studs are a beautiful combination of gripy enough for your thumb to bite into but not rough enough to tear up your skin.
I've seen some people comment in videos of how the Banter looks too plain for their tastes but I think the beauty of this knife is in how it nails all the basics perfectly without being overly flashy. Well done Ben, I hope we get to see some sprint runs in different colors/handle materials in the future!

Smooth and well put together!

Unbelievably smooth action. Centered perfectly. Sharp and with even grinds. Grippy but not tear you pants up grippy. I did not even have to adjust the clip tension. Love this latest We Knife/Ben Banter Knafe!

Excellent little knife. Very crisp action and good ergonomics. Extremely well made by WE. Although I generally buy black knives, I had to get “Ben Blue” out of respect. Thank you Ben and BladeHQ.

Everything is perfect, no trouble at all. Opening, centering, fit and finish, clip, carry is perfect. I would rather have this than the bugout. Not scary looking so that's a plus, even mom likes it. So yea, great over all, even the price.

I have been very excited to get this knife since the announcement and it did not disappoint. It's light, carries well and has great action. It fits a little small in the hand though making it a little unwieldy. Make it a half inch longer and add a flipper and this would be a perfect EDC.
