The White River Firecraft 4 is the end of the road. Stop wasting time looking elsewhere, and buy this knife! White river knives are the best value going in a production knife today. The super steel used (CPM S35VN), is state of the art, along with all other components that go into making this knife and sheath. I have been buying quality blades from the west coast for over two years read more now and have finally found one of the best production knives, with White River! Whatever blade length you choose should be good, but I don't subscribe to using or should I say "abusing" any knife as a froe. (That's why God made saws and hatchets.) So the 4" model is more than adequate. This model along with the Model 1 Backpacker PRO which I also own, has a finger choil that is very deep. When you are in the field and all the chips are down, you can feel confident in knowing that your finger is NOT going to accidently make its way onto the blade. In a survival situation, injuries need to be kept to an absolute minimum! The attention to detail is not often discussed in blade reviews, that I must point out. First, the jimping on the spine of the blade is not just ground into the blade at a right angle like many other manufacturers. White River has taken the time to angle the jimping back toward the users hand by 7-10 degrees. This is so when the user applies forward thumb pressure on the jimping area, the users thumb grip is enhanced as more pressure is applied. (This feature alone in never discussed in any review that I have ever read about concerning this knife, and should be noted.) Next is the area on the spine of the blade which is forward of the jimping. This area is ground at a perfect 90 degree angle from the side of the knife, providing a perfect edge for using the included fire steel. Which by the way, also has its "own" quarter moon area ahead of the jimping for primary striking of the fire steel. The handle of the knife is made from durable G-10 in an OD green color with thin orange accents between the tang of the blade and the OD green scales. Inset in the handle, is a stainless steel divit that serves as the friction reducer for those who prefer making fire using the bow drill method. Another over looked area in the knife reviews are the fact that White River took extra time to slightly bevel the inside of the aluminum tube rivets used in securing the handle to the blade. The hollow tubes are not just cut off and sanded flat, but are truly beveled as to prevent a potential sharp edge from cutting into your hand when gripped tightly. The handle is large enough for all but the largest of hands. You have more than enough handle for all that you would ever use this knife for. The sheath is made of quality Kydex and provides a tight and solid lockup suitable for inverted carry without a second thought. There is also an option to purchase a leather sheath at extra cost for those who prefer the traditional look. Either sheath, is over the top as far as quality goes. the knife is shipped in a WOODEN box that has a slip top on it. Also included, is a card that indicates the specs of the knife along with the signature of the person who finished and inspected it. Although not an inexpensive blade, the fit finish, functionality and attention to detail is not found in production knives at this price point much any more. Take it from me, save up the extra coin it will take to make one you own, and don't look back. Do it right the first time, you will not be disappointed. I hope to see you a little further down the trail. Peace.
