The original Camillus Cutlery Company store was a one-room operation located in Camillus, New York. The company began in 1876 as a manufacturer of hunting knives and soon expanded its product line to include a wide variety of scissors, shears, and razor blades. In 1896, the company moved to larger quarters on Genesee Street in Solvay, New York and continued to grow. By World War I, Camillus was one of the largest knife manufacturers in the United States. The company supplied troops with trench knives, machetes, and pocketknives. In addition to military contracts, Camillus also produced knives for Boy Scouts and hunters. During World War II, Camillus again supplied the military with swords, machetes, and pocketknives. At the time, the company was the largest manufacturer of folding knives in the world. After the war ended, Camillus returned to producing consumer goods such as Boy Scout knives and hunting knives. In 2007, CAMCO (Camilus Cutlery Company) filed for bankruptcy protection and ceased operations; however; several former employees formed a new cutlery company under the name "Camco Manufacturing Inc." which continues to produce knives under the Camilus brand name..
