The first recorded use of a diving knife was by the British Royal Navy in 1805. The early knives were made of steel and had a blunt tip to prevent accidental puncturing of the diver's suit. In 1837, the French inventor Auguste Denayrouze patented a diving knife with a sharpened edge and serrated teeth on the blade.
