Excellent knife

Nicholas M.

I was a little reluctant to get this knife, due to some of the complaints about the clip and release button being too stiff. I
did have both of those issues, so I used a wooden dowel that was about the same diameter as the notch on the release button and clamped the knife in a vice to depress the release button down flush with the notch on the scale, and let it sit for a couple read more of days (I've also heard of people wrapping it tightly with some paracord).

The clip was easy to pry up slightly to give it a little more play, using a thick piece of plastic to avoid scratching the finish.

Give this knife a chance to break in and you will love it!

Rock solid, but a little thin & slippery

This was my first Cold Steel purchase, and I can now attest to the company's reputation for making incredibly robust knives. The construction is as sturdy as they come. You can tell that you could beat the bejeesus out of this knife and it would hold up to whatever you throw at it. The factory sharpening is phenomenal - probably the keenest out-of-the-box edge of any knife I've read more received.

My only complaints are that the handle is very thin and slippery, and the lock is sometimes difficult to disengage, which combine for some tense moments when trying to close it. I'd love to see this model with G-10 scales. Also, the spine is quite sharp, which necessitated some light filing to knock a bit off the edges. This normally wouldn't be such an issue if it weren't for the stiffness of the lock, which I'm hoping will break-in over time.

If I had to do it all over again, I'd probably go with the American Lawman or Ultimate Hunter for the added grip, but then you don't get the tanto blade. For that, you'd have to go to the Recon 1, which adds 1/2" to an already sizable knife. Still, this is a very fine blade and an excellent addition to anyone's collection.

A lot of knife steel for the price

S35VN for THIS PRICE?? How could you pass this up?? It's amazingly slim and light. Almost too slim, actually. But the knife fits well in the pocket, and cuts all day long.

Price To Quality Excellent

The knife came to me super sharp. The thing is crazy light for its size and super slim. S35vn is great steel especially in a knife at the given pricing, the aluminum handle is fantastically ergonomic for my hand(and slick looking), and the lock(after breaking it in) isn't too difficult to handle. Couldn't have asked more for the cost and super glad I made the purchase.

It's so good.

It might be my favorite folder .. the hollow grind with the S35vn is so slicey and I almost never have to sharpen it ... the blade stock is fat .. but the knife is somehow light because of the aluminum scales. It's truly and amazing EDC knife... and kind of a classy carry.

A Slim Beast!

This is a great knife if you are looking to carry a large blade, but want to have it still fit in you pocket....along with your keys, etc. This knife is very thin, yet still feels quite strong. It has the tri-ad lock which is second to none, and makes a great sound when it locks into place. The lock was a little tight when I first got it, but after about a week of carry and use, read more it loosened up and works great. I think for the price this is a very hard to beat knife. Not the most graceful thing, but a Slim Beast!!!

Needed a rugged blade. and got one.

i carry two knives usually.
One medium size in my back right pocket and a larger in my front right.
I needed a beefy folder to use instead of my voyager XL to be more uhh.. appropriate for work.

So far it's been great. it's smooth enough to open and close one handed if you know what you're doing.

The aluminum handles look just like the picture in person, kinda read more a bronze grey anodize.

I have a deep carry clip, a snaggle tooth, and a ring pull in the mail to add to it.

Overall it's a good buy. i'd recommend it.

Well built.

This has been an awesome work knife for me, I feel naked without it.

Interesting Blade

Jozef J.

Now this is an interesting blade. Steel is really nice. The entire thing is pretty slim and slender. It is however pretty damn wide in the pocket. The lock while I'm sure is really strong it is a pain the in hole to get shut one handed and has a feel like metal running on metal. Overall however this is a sturdy little blade made from premium steel at a really nice price. Fit and read more finish seem on as well as sharp out of the box. It is however a very very thick blade stock so not as slicey as I would like.

Surprisingly great

super thin, amazing hollow grind, thick blade stock, and pretty light, for its price it is a steal if you can handle the triad lock it was a little tough at first but its pretty easy at this point. this knife was meant to be strong and built to last

Great knife

Christopher M.

Very thin, super solid lock up with zero blade play, centered blade, even bevels, the handle material is smooth but the contour gives you a nice secure grip, a right and left clip are provided each is curved to match the contour of the handle. Just be careful if reversing the thumb stud. The thumb stud metal is a little soft. A screw driver can fray the stud creating a sharp spot. read more I sanded my smooth.

This knife is big, but super light.

On the bigger side, great steel, but my favorite thing about this knife is how light it is.

Awesome

I just bought this and I’m amazed by the smooth action of this knife. Extremely solid lockup as always with the triad lock, and when you disengage it the blade just drops with virtually no friction. Great ergos and a made with my favorite steel.

Great knife no question.

Gotta say I got this knife mostly for the XHP steel at a super competitive price they've since switched to S35 but that's still a great steel and this price still blows most of the market out of the water.

But having gotten the knife it's slim light and surprisingly smooth in addition to the pricing advantages. Also I really like the looks of the knife just a very simple read more attractive design I've heard it called the Cold Steel Gentleman's knife and I agree even though it's a full size knife.

My only two issues were the thumb stud, Cold Steel's studs are sharp as heck and I don't have thumb calluses, and the triad lock while smoother and easier to operate than the pro lite I had before it is still pretty rough on the thumbs.

GREAT large folder

Carson S.

Ive had one of these for maybe a year now. Bit on the tall side when closed, but so thin you don't notice it in the pocket. I'm honestly considering buying a second one, but mine is holding up so well that it diesnt seem necessary. The XHP steel is all they claimed it would be. Barring loss or theft, this seems like a "buy it for life" knife.

Great "smallish" tanto

Aaron W.

Bear in mind my model is in S35VN steel but other than that its the same build. This has a great balance between dare I say "refined" and "rugged". Same great Cold steel american tanto geometry. Came beyond razor sharp. Centered with good lock up worked it with nano oil and it can be opened and closed with one hand reliably. Very nice knife.

Been carrying this knife about 3 months, love how slim it is for a bigger folder. You don't even notice in pocket. Has the super stong Cold Steel Tri-ad.

This thing is slick!

Baldemar G.

It feels like a $300 knife! Its very smooth and locks into place with authority. Very hard knife to beat in regards to quality, especially when you consider the fact that it comes with CTS-XHP steel.

My only Cold Steel

I'm primarily a Spyderco collector and this was my first Cold Steel. I was very impressed. The XHP blade is very versatile and tough. It holds an edge for a good amount of usage. The handle is probably my favorite part. It feels amazing in hand and the overall look of it is just right. It's a solid knife in a sleek design.

Love that's very slim in the pocket, and light for it's size, super strong lock
Only bad thing is the pocketclip is to hard.

One of the best cold steel knives

This knife has a pretty good amount of blade, and is surprisingly light. It has a fairly slim profile as well. Plus with the tri-ad, I know it can handle anything I throw at it.

Best Cold Steel Folder

I absolutely love this knife. Great ergos, thin, lightweight, excellent steel, etc. Big enough to do anything reasonable that a knife should do and classy looking enough to take almost anywhere. My current favorite knife.

Worth the money.

Like this knife works as a heavy duty gentleman’s folder if there is such a thing. A little slippery in the hand otherwise would be 5 stars.

Beater knife

Code 4, Solid Quality

I have EDCed this knife for several days and I really like it! It is light and relatively thin so I don't notice it in my pocket! This is a very well made, solid, sharp knife. The Tri-Ad lock locks up very tight and stout; there is absolutely no blade movement when this blade is locked open! Great quality at an excellent price!

Code 4, Solid Knife

I have EDCed my Code 4 for a little over a week and it is a winner! I like everything about this knife and forget it in my pocket because it is a fairly light knife. It is very well made, it locks up solid, and the aluminum handle is very functional. The blade is very sharp right out of the box. Cold Steel construction, fit, and finish is excellent!

Heavy duty edc

The triad lock is a tank. I have used this in batoning and all kinds of cutting tasks and never worried about it closing on me. A little sluggish on the opening, but it's smooth and the thumbstud is pretty great. Doesn't hold the best edge but it's hard to sharpen. I have had this one for years and it keeps going just like the day I got it.

NEWS FLASH: Super Steel Code 4 is Pretty Super-Duper

Aaron H.

So for those who are wondering, this is the 2015 reissued version of the standard Cold Steel Code 4 Clip Point using the new Carpenter CTS-XHP steel (which is replacing the previous CS standard AUX8A in most all CS knives going forward). It's the same as the previous Code 4 in all other respects and has roughly the same price tag as the previous version (which has since lowered read more in price to around $50). With the overall stellar rep of CTS-XHP from it's previous, limited use in some Spyderco/Kershaw knives, I was willing to bite the bullet and pick this beauty up to try the steel out...as much as for the chance to try out the Code 4 platform.

Couldn't have made a better decision there. Overall, it's surprisingly light for it's size, has a super slim cross-section in-pocket and still manages to have surprisingly great ergos in-hand. I feel like the thinness of the handle probably would cause some hot-spot issues during prolonged/hard use...but I'm not sure I envision using the knife in that POU...which is a little odd considering the fact that CS knife sales are usually leveraged based on the strength of the Triad lock. Meh. I figure strength is always good, even if it's not necessary in-role.

The clip style blade, though stout in this iteration, is large enough for most of the jobs I would press it into for the heavy-duty EDC-Plus role. It has enough belly to be utilitarian and a high enough hollow grind to make for a relatively decent edge geometry overall. The factory grind seems a little steep and wasn't exactly symmetrical toward the tip, making for a slightly jacked-up point geometry. That said, I should be able to remedy the issue on my EPA 4 (once the initial edge wears down enough to warrant re-sharpening). I'm a little reticent to see how difficult XHP will be to sharpen - but if the reports from the blade forums are any indication, it should be fine. If the speed that it took a hair popping edge with only a light stopping (using black and white compound) is any indication, it should be a breeze.

I will echo what some of the other reviewers of the Code 4 have said in that the clip is a bit too stubby and therefore stiff. I'm usually able to remove the clips on Cold Steel knives and bend them outwards slightly (from where the screws mount) to allow me to bypass any need to sand or fill in the handles. The Code 4 obviously doesn't have the pants-chewing problem of some of the other G10 handled CS knives - but being so short, the initial flair of the clip is still shallow, making it hard to get the entire clip over the edge of most shorts/pants/jeans with reinforced pockets. I tried to put that part of the clip in a vise to accentuate the flair and fix the issue...but with limited success. The whole clip is just too stout and built to lie too close to the scales for me to be able to bend it like that. That relatively minor (in my book) issue aside, the entire knife gets my vote overall. Time will tell on the performance of the steel. Rest assured that I'll be updating the review in the long-term if it doesn't perform true to expectations.

P.S. Should also mention that the action started out being pretty stiff (as many Cold Steel's do) but it's softened up quite a bit in the 2 week break-in period since purchase and is now relatively easy to actuate one handed and glass smooth as it does.

So that's my review; hope it helps.

Pretty darn good

Got this knife in the mail today- it exceeded my expectations. Most of my knives these days are in the higher end american made variety or midtech/customs. I bought this because I've been curious about Cold Steel for a while and with their upgrade in materials it was too hard to resist.

The aluminum handles are very slim, so the knife disappears in the pocket. The blade read more steel is exceptional, and the grind is nice and even. Speaking of the blade, it closes with perfect centering and there's 0 play when open.

Of course, at this price point, there has to be a catch- I've found 2 so far. 1 is that the lockbar is pretty stiff. Like 2 hand closing is uncomfortable stiff. But I've noticed that depressing the back half is easier than the front or middle.

The other, grievous, ridiculous offense is the pathetic excuse for a pocket clip- CS claims to make working knives, but it's a struggle to get the damn thing into the skinniest pocket of any of my blue jeans. I don't think I can get it over any of my reinforced pockets. Definitely something that I'm going to replace, because trying to bend the tip up with pliers yielded disappointing results.

All in all, the knife is great. Fantastic construction, solid design, great materials. The lock is pretty stiff and the pocket clip is stupid though.

I always try to have some more budget-friendly blades on my wishlist so my wife has options when it comes time for my birthday or Christmas. This Code 4 was one of my Christmas presents last month, and it's a winner. So far I've used it for everything from opening packages, to food prep, to batoning firewood into kindling. It's held up great. I did end up putting a light acid wash read more on the blade, because after cutting up some chicken I waited too long to clean it and the blade stained (we're talking like 30 minutes with the juices on the blade). Watch out for that. But the AUS8A takes a stupid sharp edge and holds it pretty well. When it does dull, it's easy to touch up. It's very slim and lightweight, but also fills the hand well and locks up ridiculously solidly with no blade play in any direction. Easy one-handed operation after a little practice. I really have no complaints. This is a worker, and you won't feel bad when the knife is finally trashed and worn out because it didn't cost $200+. Well done, Cold Steel!
