About Cold Steel Recon 1

The Micro Recon series from Cold Steel shares most of the same features as its bigger siblings. The differences are the use of super lightweight, strong handle slabs and a small key ring for attachment to keychain, packs, etc.The blades are made out of 4034SS stainless steel and the G-10 style Griv-Ex handles scalloped for a terrific non slip grip. Plus, they are held together by the latest in high strength mechanical fasteners and further anchored by a 6061 heat-tReated spacer. To complement their super tough blades and handles they're equipped with Cold Steel's REVOlutionary Tri-Ad lock, which practically precludes lock failure. To complement their tactical mission, Cold Steel has given each blade a tough, black, Tuff-Ex finish. Testing has shown this coating offers three major advantages for tactical blades. First, it helps the blade to resist rust. Second, it eliminates glare and light reflections, which may give its user away. And third, it's a superior lubricant, which causes the blade to slip through even tough material with markedly less friction.

Not a fan

First off the Triad Lock is extremely stiff to the point of sore thumb. The knife was not very sharp out of the box and when trying to switch the included clip , the screws keep spinning as if they are stripped out. Knife centers but is stiff as heck. I either got a bad one or these knives are not worth the money IMHO. Now I have a new Beater.

My Best Hard Use EDC Folder

Chris M.

I picked my Recon 1 up about 6 months ago and have been carrying it every day since then. I am a true sucker for a clip point, and I will say that the design of this knife truly stands up to expectations! Even the DLC coating stands up to everything I've thrown at it! When I was doing research on this knife, I thought that the ergonomics of the handle would be way off. I thought read more the finger grooves were going to be too much, but they fit in my hand perfectly! I've read about a lot of people saying that the handle texture is too aggressive, but as someone who spends most of their time working outside, I found this to be quite nice. I've also read that the handle material will tear up your pockets, but up to this point I have had no issues. While S35VN isn't the toughest of steels, this knife will stand up to most things you throw against it. And even if the edge gets rolled, this steel is extremely easy to sharpen. I love this knife, and I carry it every single day. My pocket feels lonely without it! I 100% recommend this knife to any and all looking for a very good tactical hard use folder.

Great Knife

I was lucky enough to pick this up for under 100$. The only warning I've got is she's chunky and bigger than you think. The lock is strong to both open and close it. Blade was very sharp on arrival. Comfortable in the hand. Not an EDC knife for most.

Great bang for your buck.

Heavy, sharp as can be out of the box, and no play. Great work knife or "larger" type of folder, if your state permits 4".

Toughest knife i have ever owned

Jacob G.

I'm not one for long explanations so here is what the knife has done all without getting any blemishes, chips, scratches, or dings. I pommel smashed some dry ice at work to fit it into a cooler. I cut some pallet binding like they were wet toilet paper. My torque bit screwdriver broke when I tried to take the knife apart. Still no imperfections or dullness.

Well-built and good value

It carries a bit big in the pocket and the handle texture is aggressive. However it performs well as a large EDC, is light for its size, and the shape of the handle fits my hand well. For the money, it's a good value for a larger folding knife with a premium steel and G-10 scales. I used JB weld on the pocket area around the clip. It will definitely stay in my carry rotation.

Best value in a folder

This knife came with a better edge and a crisper bevel than anything ive had straight from the factory. For under a 100 bucks I can’t think of anything that comes close in performance and honestly it’s struggle to think of anything over 100. If you just want a knife to perform and don’t want to worry about it, I can’t recommend it enough

Cold Steel for hard use, not for looks

I do like this knife because of it's robustness, and its solid lockup. I would say it is built to survive harsh strikes and blows to the blade. The negative to me is that it is very heavy (as to be expected), and what bugs me the most is the thumb stud uses a flat-blade screw head as apposed to the "hex" or "star" head, and to me I just don't like the look of it as the pivot screw read more uses the normal hex/star and it seems odd they did not continue this design to the thumb stud. Again, not VERY important but little things like that bug me. Aside from that, the black DLC is very weak compared to other knife makers DLC application and removes very easily. As a hard use work knife, it is great. As pocket candy or a show knife, it is not.

Basically a Fixed Blade

This is a folder for when a fixed blade may be socially inappropriate. Like weddings and children’s birthday parties.

I got this one for about 92 bucks on Amazon, and its worth every penny and then some. The price on this site is good as well, anytime you can get a premium steel for under 100 bucks its a score!! I really like the way this knife holds a blade very sharp and easy to keep that way, one secret to knives staying sharp. Don't let them get dull! Keep up on them with just stropping and read more you will always be ready to go with your blades. I like this site as they do have a lot of great deals if you look for them.

Great design, lacking execution

I really want to like the knife. Been eyeing it for a couple years. Love the profile and design but it needs improvement. First, the pocket clip just sucks. Needs to be deeper and more hefty. Shame on them! The blade deployment is stiff and clumsy and the G10 scales are way too rough. The only saving grace to this knife is the S35 steel, its size and aesthetics. I've seen worse read more for the money and have seen better for the money.

Big and Cool

It feels like quality, but it is larger than I was expecting, and not an EDC type of knife. Regardless, it's cool, and can also be used for cutting things.

And this is one! I have a few different versions of the larger one after I initially bought a mini just to check it out for the price (which may have initially been a sale), wore the blade coating off the thing, but still looks and works great! The big ones are a bit of a handful and may or may not be for EDC as one person said below, but this knife is snappy and sturdy. You can read more tell that Lynn Thompson puts everything he has into designing a great and quality knife.

Very Happy

I wanted a larger knife for EDC, and this one fits the bill! I am very happy with it and am glad I ordered it. It is not too big in the pocket and I love having the larger blade whenever I need it. I recommend it.

Work Horse

Once opened the grip is perfect in my hand, wanting to get some work done.
The weight is perfect light for the size of blade.
The lock is perfection. A foldable fixed blade. It does have its limits but it will get the job done.
Tactical, Working, or just EDC.
This is a big folder you need.

Built like a tank, not necessarily for EDC

The Recon 1 comes as sharp as any Cold Steel (shaving sharp) and fairly stiff. you need to give it some good wrist to pop it open. The Recon 1 is as close to indestructible as a folding knife can get, and is very light for its large size. Its a pretty good work knife, a great outdoors knife, and a decent EDC for some people, depending on how much you care about weight and size, read more and what pants you wear.

Overall, great knife, holds an awesome edge, but better for your glovebox, tool bag, or backpack.

Interesting Knife

I bought this knife for my oldest son as a Christmas present. It is hefty and comfortable in the hand. The sandpaper feeling is a bit odd at first, but I rather like it. I let my younger son check it out and he's pretty finicky. He wants one too! It's a bit larger than I usually buy, but I really like it.

Finally Living up to the Hype

Cold Steel Recon 1, is the first Cold Steel product I have owned that I haven't been disappointed in. While I think it would be an understatement to say that I have had bad luck with cold steel in the past, the Recon 1 feels like the complete package. Stiff Tri-ad lock, large menacing size, nice murder-y color, fantastic ergonomics, and tried and true. Is it worth $100? I would read more be tempted to say maybe, yeah. It is well made and tough, plus it feels just great regardless of how you hold it. I will say that the action comes pretty stiff and the clip is laughably short and stiff. But it is a great knife, sure to meet all my big game needs. 87/100

Chipped blade

I bought this knife a while ago, and I’ve only used it twice. And after that small amount of use I have 3 chips on the edge. Solid knife. Mine might be a special exception.

NOT a EDC knife.

All Recon I knives follow this review.
Very solid built knife. Will quickly destroy your pants pocket top edge.
But too heavy(and not pocket friendly) to be considered a EDC knife.

Pretty Sick Knife

I've been skeptical about cold steel products in the past. I never really got the appeal, but getting this thing in hand, I was blown away with the quality and solidity of the knife. Value seems to be there as well, s35vn for under a hundred dollars. Check it out if you're remotely interested. It won't disappoint.

Good Edc

It came razer sharp out of the box, and for the price its hard to beat. Its a very big yet a very pretty knife. Almost perfect Edc.I think even if you like a small knife, you would still like this knife.
Only flaw: The pocket clip is very "small" compared to the knife and gets stuck if you pocket sometimes.

Love it

This is a solid and beefy knife. The triad lock is awesome, and not nearly as stiff and hard to operate as a lot of people say. The G10 is very rough but that’s actually a feature that I like about the knife. Very grippy with wet hands. S35vn steel...a great purchase!

Solid knife minor issues for me.

Ashkan E.

Pros(for me): Good blade shape and size, handle fits me like a glove, normal reversible clip and thumb stud stuff, pseudo choil to choke up on, beefy triad lock. Good price for materials.

Cons: G10 texture is sand paper like I can literally file my nails or buff off skin with these handles. clip doesn't cooperate getting in and out of the pocket between the low ramp and the read more serious texture. Black on black on black murder-y coloration just isn't my thing.

Fixes. Just spent like 1 minute outside with a sanding block and buffed down the G10 to a light/moderate texture definitely still bumpy but no longer sand paper-y(I know for some people this is treason). While I did that I took off the clip to get that area sanded and also took some pliers propped it against the edge of my desk and curled the ramp up a tiny bit on the knife so that it still clips into my pocket but it goes in easy and doesn't fight me too much pulling it out.

So far its quite nice. Good steel, beyond razor sharp and really good price. For all the nit pickers this is a cold steel knife not a fit and finish gem or pocket jewlery, this is a tool with purpose and it serves its purpose extremely well. I will update review with harduse after christmass.

Cold Steel Recon S35VN

Christopher L.

This is honestly one of the better EDC knives I've ever carried for consistent hard use. I do heavy concrete work on bridges and my knives get used to death.....sharpened and used to death again! This knife is as strong as any Ernst, ZT or other custom knife brands. This is my first Recon in S35VN. My other 3 were Aus8 steel.

Loving this knife!

I was in the market for a large heavy-duty pocket knife. As a middle-aged knife enthusiast I am a bit nostalgic when it comes to pocket knives and I prefer a traditional lockback locking mechanism over the newer flipper types available. After both reading and watching countless online reviews of larger size pocket knives I settled on this Cold Steel Recon-1 because so many people read more like it. It is a stout bull of a folding knife and is very rigid and sturdy. The handle scales are ultra grippy and ergonomically it feels great in my large sized hand. The blade came pretty sharp right out of the box and is perfectly centered and evenly ground. The Tri-ad lock is very secure and there is zero blade play up and down or side to side. This is truly a working man's knife and seems as though it will be able to take on anything that I will throw at it. I am super excited and highly impressed with this purchase. For just over $100.00 with the shipping method that I chose I feel like it was a great deal. Thank you Blade HQ for your part in selling and shipping me this stellar knife. I could not be any happier with it.

Outstanding value.

This is one serious tactical style knife whose value far exceeds its pricetag. While the Emerson-like ergonomics are very good with the finger grooves and aggressive texture on the G10, the blade is even better with 4 inches of premium steel that opens with authority and locks up perfectly with the triad lock. As such, while I’m not a fan of Cold Steel’s tiny but extremely tight read more pocket clips, the incredible quality for a relatively modest price makes this one highly recommended.
