Not a fan

First off the Triad Lock is extremely stiff to the point of sore thumb. The knife was not very sharp out of the box and when trying to switch the included clip , the screws keep spinning as if they are stripped out. Knife centers but is stiff as heck. I either got a bad one or these knives are not worth the money IMHO. Now I have a new Beater.

My Best Hard Use EDC Folder

Chris M.

I picked my Recon 1 up about 6 months ago and have been carrying it every day since then. I am a true sucker for a clip point, and I will say that the design of this knife truly stands up to expectations! Even the DLC coating stands up to everything I've thrown at it! When I was doing research on this knife, I thought that the ergonomics of the handle would be way off. I thought read more the finger grooves were going to be too much, but they fit in my hand perfectly! I've read about a lot of people saying that the handle texture is too aggressive, but as someone who spends most of their time working outside, I found this to be quite nice. I've also read that the handle material will tear up your pockets, but up to this point I have had no issues. While S35VN isn't the toughest of steels, this knife will stand up to most things you throw against it. And even if the edge gets rolled, this steel is extremely easy to sharpen. I love this knife, and I carry it every single day. My pocket feels lonely without it! I 100% recommend this knife to any and all looking for a very good tactical hard use folder.

Great bang for your buck.

Heavy, sharp as can be out of the box, and no play. Great work knife or "larger" type of folder, if your state permits 4".

Well-built and good value

It carries a bit big in the pocket and the handle texture is aggressive. However it performs well as a large EDC, is light for its size, and the shape of the handle fits my hand well. For the money, it's a good value for a larger folding knife with a premium steel and G-10 scales. I used JB weld on the pocket area around the clip. It will definitely stay in my carry rotation.

Great design, lacking execution

I really want to like the knife. Been eyeing it for a couple years. Love the profile and design but it needs improvement. First, the pocket clip just sucks. Needs to be deeper and more hefty. Shame on them! The blade deployment is stiff and clumsy and the G10 scales are way too rough. The only saving grace to this knife is the S35 steel, its size and aesthetics. I've seen worse read more for the money and have seen better for the money.

Big and Cool

It feels like quality, but it is larger than I was expecting, and not an EDC type of knife. Regardless, it's cool, and can also be used for cutting things.

Not worth the hype

Love the Cold Steel knives I have...

And this is one! I have a few different versions of the larger one after I initially bought a mini just to check it out for the price (which may have initially been a sale), wore the blade coating off the thing, but still looks and works great! The big ones are a bit of a handful and may or may not be for EDC as one person said below, but this knife is snappy and sturdy. You can read more tell that Lynn Thompson puts everything he has into designing a great and quality knife.

Built like a tank, not necessarily for EDC

The Recon 1 comes as sharp as any Cold Steel (shaving sharp) and fairly stiff. you need to give it some good wrist to pop it open. The Recon 1 is as close to indestructible as a folding knife can get, and is very light for its large size. Its a pretty good work knife, a great outdoors knife, and a decent EDC for some people, depending on how much you care about weight and size, read more and what pants you wear.

Overall, great knife, holds an awesome edge, but better for your glovebox, tool bag, or backpack.

NOT a EDC knife.

All Recon I knives follow this review.
Very solid built knife. Will quickly destroy your pants pocket top edge.
But too heavy(and not pocket friendly) to be considered a EDC knife.

Outstanding value.

This is one serious tactical style knife whose value far exceeds its pricetag. While the Emerson-like ergonomics are very good with the finger grooves and aggressive texture on the G10, the blade is even better with 4 inches of premium steel that opens with authority and locks up perfectly with the triad lock. As such, while I’m not a fan of Cold Steel’s tiny but extremely tight read more pocket clips, the incredible quality for a relatively modest price makes this one highly recommended.
