My favorite knife

I have almost 200 knives (its a problem) but this is my absolute favorite edc pocket knife. Its the perfect size, has a deep carry pocket clip, its light and ergonomic, the steel is very good (s35vn would've been better), the compression lock is the best design ever conceived of for a pocket knife, its got a great belly for slicing and a perfect choil for choking up with your grip. read more Its literally perfect!

Imperfect, But my Favorite

Objectively the action is not perfect. It doesn't quite drop shut despite my best efforts, but it is still a good action and I can get it to have a minimal amount of play and still drop with a small amount of wrist movement. My favorite of the knives I own. The carbon fiber (even though it is not fully CF) is classy and the Spyderco wire clip is great. Fantastic ergos with the finger read more choil. I would recommend this knife to anyone.

The worst action. Slow shipping. Didn't send my free t-shirt

This would be a great knife if it were made in the US factory like the Paramilitary 2. The action is so ridiculously tight that I can press the compression lock and shake it hard and it still won't close. In fact the blade doesn't even move. Very disappointing (especially for the price). I'm now second guessing buying the Kapara when its available again as it's made in the same read more Tiawan factory. Which sucks because I was really looking forward to that knife.

If the action is because of excessive use of thread lock than shame on Spyderco for not fixing this problem after so many complaints. Another thing I noticed was the detent ball gets caught in the compression lock cut out on the blade when closing. This is why you have to press so hard that it hurts your finger tip. Also, as others have stated, the edges of the hole in the blade are sharp.
I hope this saves someone else the irritation of thinking they are getting a small compression lock knife that works like its a mini PM2.

This is a great, well made knife that is ruined by minor manufacturing issues that would be easy to fix. Could see the Sage 5 being as popular as the Paramilitary 2 if this happened.

Blade Hq shipping is the slowest I've encountered so far in my knife collecting. I was also supposed to receive a free Spyderco t-shirt with my order. It wasn't sent. The free shirt isn't a big deal for me but I still would have worn it around the house if it came. For my first order here I'm not impressed.

Decent little Knife

This knife is overall, pretty good. The great wire clip is a plus, the blade is an Excellent slicer, and the lockup is snappy and solid. The only issue I have with it is the spyderco's peel-ply style Carbon fibre scales are very poorly done.

Nice

Really nice knife. I own multiple Spyderco knives now and I definitely prefer the leaf-shape blades like this and the Manix 2 over the more common Spyderco blades. Love the compression lock, but honestly I prefer the feel of G-10 to the carbon fiber.

Best EDC I've ever owned

This knife is phenomenal on so many levels. S30V steel is durable and easy to sharpen, the CF scales don't show wear, even when scraped against metal tools in my pocket all day at work. It's lightweight, has super smooth action, and the ergonomics are unbelievable. If I could rate this 6 stars, I would.

Possibly the best Spyderco ~3" Spyderco ever made.

A bold statement in the title, but one that I can easily stand behind. The Sage blade is just amazing and with the compression lock Spyderco has really hit the jackpot. It flies open like any Spyderco, the lockup is solid and with no sign of play. It is not the smoothest knife I've ever owned, but it is a fantastic user that can be trusted to hit way above it's size.

A must for spyderco fans

I own many spyderco knives but lately the sage 5 has been monopolizing my pocket. I love the textured peel ply carbon fiber and compression lock but most of all I love the ergonomics. It’s so comfortable. If you’re thinking about picking one up, stop! Just get one, you won’t be sorry.

What are you waiting for?

This spyderco hits all the high points, 3 inch-ish leaf blade, carbon fiber for looks, upgraded blade steel, and a cool compression lock. Size, shape, toughness, and looks, this is a great EDC blade. Well above the middle of the pack.

Ultimate EDC

This is the best edc money can buy. It's super slim, phenomenal blade shape, great finger choil, deep carry pocket clip, and superb blade steel. This is the knife that started my obsession with the Sage line. I love you and my wife hates you for it. Thanks BladeHQ

Simply Amazing

Currently my absolute favorite knife that I own. It is beautiful, comfortable in hand, perfectly sized (for my hands, at least), smooth, and simply enjoyable to use. This was my first Spyderco (and compression lock) and I am thoroughly impressed.

Very close to perfect

I have owned my Sage 5 for a little over 8 months. The handle and finger choil make this knife super comfortable to hold on to. The blade is FFG so it slices like no tomorrow. The deep carry pocket clip isn't my favorite but it gets the job done. The only issue I have ever had with this knife is all pivot. It came with red loctite on it so that was a pain to heat up and get the read more pivot screw out. And the action was rather stiff. I took the washers out and polished them and threw them back in with a little oil and now I have a dropping blade. And it's smooth as glass when you open it.

Perfect except for one little thing

This knife was perfect for EDC and carried well in almost anything. It was fast, smooth, sharp OOTB, and beautiful. The only downside is the wire clip that caused the knife to be lost after only a few weeks. It will be missed

Fantastic Sage 5

I have the Sage 5 from Blade HQ as my dressy knife. Couldn’t be happier. Action is great. The CF is smooth and classy looking. And the blade was super sharp out the box.

Best knife

I bought this knife because I got a new job working in a warehouse and I wanted something that would hold a good edge and I could open and close with one hand easily with a strong lock up. I did a lot of research and the Sage 5 came up a few times and was within budget for me. When I got the knife I was very impressed with the initial feel and look of the knife. It’s beautiful read more and feels amazing in hand. I love it. I carry it every day and have no problems with it whatsoever! Cuts through anything and everything and is easy to sharpen. Just an amazing knife

Very impressive

Just like the rest of these reviews this is an excellent knife. I will say from Blade HQ this knife came perfectly done between fit finish to blade centering and I like the scales. Feels nice in hand, I might like the carbon fiber better than the pm2 and that is saying something, since I'm a big fan. If you have been thinking about getting one go for it. Ps. thank you Chelsea you read more rock👍

Lets keep this simple.......

PERFECT

If you like the PM2 but feel it's to large for EDC in town or in an office envio torment this is your knife. 3" leaf shape blade in S30V with a deep carry clip and the PM2 or Para 3 compression lock. In my opinion a better option than the Para 3 if you like the blade length and a more discreet EDC. The G10 scales with an overlay of carbon fiber makes it feel and look elegant. Depending read more on my clothing and mood I usually rotate knives between the Slysz Bowie, ZT 0450 in titanium and the Sage 5. Very happy with the purchase.

Sold on Spyderco

I've always carried Benchmades on me and never owned a Spyderco. I decided to pull the trigger and get the Sage 5 as my first Spyderco. Needless to say that I am sold. This is an amazing knife. A beautiful design and perfect for any EDC tasks. I've been carrying it non stop for about a month now and it is flawless. For what you get with material and build, you can not beat the price read more either. The deployment is smooth and the lock up is tight. I am also left handed and the compression lock was a little difficult at first to close. After using it for a while now I can just as easily close it as if it was my right hand. I'd recommend this knife to anyone. No complaints. Definitely more Spyderco purchases for me in the future. Paramilitary 3 perhaps?!

Maybe better than the PM2

Dwayne S.

Well I love my PM2's. But they were missing one thing that Spyderco does right, but they didnt put it on the PM2. And that is the best clip out there. Spyderco's wire clip is perfection. So this Sage is a PM2 but with a better clip, and a leaf shaped blade. I for one think this Sage 5 is just as good as the PM2, if not better. But for the price, you should buy 2. You can not go read more wrong with this blade.

Dream come true for compression lock fans.

Got the Sage 5 as soon as BHQ had them. Perfect little brother to the PM2.
Pretty much the same action but a little lighter blade and much shorter.
One-hand opening and closing is smooth. I had to loosen the main torx screw as it was definitely too tight from the factory. Still now wobble after I loosened it a little. The blade drops by itself all the way down and bounces read more back when unlocked at parallel to the ground.

The blade came razor sharp from the factory. The finish is just perfect.
I did use a red scotch brite to deburr the hole. Absolutely perfect now with no bite.

Great "little" EDC knife. I like it more than my Manix 2 b/c of the compression lock. I like it more than my Sage 2 as well. I'll buy the Titanium handle version if it comes out .

"The" best Sage

The dream is here. One "Para 2" in a small package. The perfect EDC and by far the best in the Sage series (I have all of them in my collection).
Thanks Spyderco for this dream came true. Thanks BladeHQ and specially thanks to Sal Glesser for the perfect compression lock in EDC world.

Might be the perfect Spyderco

Love this knife so far. Lightweight, extremely smooth, and rock solid lock up. Almost like a miniature Paramilitary 2. Handles are grippy and lock is easy to disengage. Nicely done Spyderco!
