Rust ??

David L.

I bought this knife back in Oct. of 2020 and it's been with some of my other knives in a drawer in my bedroom. I opened it up this morning to find RUST along the top of the blade !! Very disappointing as I have other knives from Blade HQ that I carry every day and are wonderful. At least now I know not to use this knife for anything important.

Not for soft hands

The amount of people saying they cant open it one handed or that they cant put in in their pocket is laughable. Even saw a guy say he couldn't open a box with it. Sounds like a user error to me. It can be opened with one hand and clipped into a pocket with one hand. It is a tight lock so it can't be flicked around and played with like a fidget spinner, so if that is what you are read more looking for this probably isn't the knife for you. The quality of steel is reflected in the price, but for that price it is a good knife that can handle normal edc tasks. I give these out as gifts or small items since they're so reasonably priced and people seem to love them. One problem with the tan scale is that it will start to pick up color from grass and new blue jeans. maybe it'll wash off with some scrubbing but haven't tried and don't plan too.

Decent Design, poor execution

As the title suggests, I was looking forward to getting this knife. However, it arrived with significant blade play, lock stick, hardware that strips before it can be unscrewed and unsurprisingly, an uneven bevel. The pocket clip isn't great, it doesn't fit well on thicker reenforced pockets. The blade is a nice shape and seems to cut well enough when resharpened.

Very unique yet works well

I'm a big fisherman so I need a bait knife and this works well. It's easy to sharpen yet it can hold an edge. the aluminum scales are nice because all the little scratches gives the knife some patina.

A good knife but...

I use this knife daily for work. I chose this knife because I despise flippers and it is one of the few choices left.

Everything about the design is great for its use. I find it very easy to open one handed using my thumb contrary to many reviews.

I usually find edges not up to my standard of sharpness. Putting the knife on my edge pro quickly revealed the edge bevel read more was not symmetrical, nor even. Quite a bit of grinding with a diamond plate using the sharper bevel left me still not able to get the steeper side to burr. That side had been ground on a radius. To save time, steel, and diamonds, I put a double bevel on it. Nice sharp and durable edge. I expect to have to sharpen the knife but the uneven bevel cost a star.

Stripped Pivot Screw and Loose Blade

Pros: The blade is fairly sharp out of the box and has an excellent satin finish. The micarta scale looks almost exactly like in the picture and the satin-finished pocket clip and lockbar stop provide a nice contrast against the matte grey steel frame.

Cons: The blade has a lot of play right out of the box and is nowhere near centered when closed. It was also fairly stiff read more to open. When I tried to tighten the pivot screw and reduce the blade play the screw was stripped almost immediately. I used the same CRKT pivot screw tightener I've been using for months now, but the screw's metal was so soft it was stripped before I realized it.

This is especially odd because the other Flatiron I own (the version with an aluminum scale) has never had any of the above issues despite a few months of use and tinkering with the pivot screw.

Conclusion: My experience wasn't the best and I wouldn't recommend this knife to a friend. Definitely not worth the money I paid for it.

Had to return it

The good: LOVE the micarta, although definitely nowhere near as blue as in the photo - much more muted/grey - also a bit on the slippery side. Loved the length of both the blade and the handle. Didn't mind the weight based on the size of the knife.

The bad: The action was terrrrible and it wasn't centered. Blade arrived quite dull. The clip was so stiff I couldn't open it read more to even put it in pocket.

Really wanted to love it, its a shame.

Interesting Knife

Shane A.

I only recently got serious about knife collecting. The Geber Flatiron is my first knife that has a cleaver style blade and micarta scales. It's an interesting knife that is sure to be a conversation starter. The frame lock is solid, but it is going to put a callous on your thumb if you are one to use your knife very often. It feels great in the hand, especially when you choke up read more on the choil and the micarta is exactly how I hoped it would feel - not too grippy or slippery. If I could give it a 4.5/5.

This is the Flatiron I have been waiting for.

Michael B.

I really like this knife and I am glad Gerber made this version. I am so glad they came out with the D2 version and the micarta is a really nice bonus. This is one sweet knife.

Big and Pretty

I had been holding out on trying a cleaver blade since I saw this D2/Micarta model was coming. I'm glad I waited. It looks great. The micarta isn't the most grippy, but it's not slick like the Elementum micarta. It feels good. I have XL hands and can easily get a 4 finger grip without choking up to the finger choil.

It came centered and just under hair shaving sharp. Lockup read more is solid. I would not call the blade finish satin. It is definitely polished. I was hoping to be able to spydie flick it open, but it's too stiff. I tried loosening the pivot, but you can't get it loose enough without getting the blade way off center.

Overall a great knife. Probably a little too heavy and bulky in the pocket to become a frequent EDC for me, but it's definitely fun to use.

Cool, but useless for most applications

John R.

This is a really cool knife, but is not practical for most applications. A nightmare to open boxes with. Great for taking out on picnics and cutting Cheese or Sausage though! Don't get me wrong, it does look really cool and will get heads turning when you bring out this guy, but as an EDC I'd have to say no.

Great little cleaver for the $$

You get what you pay for as far as it being alittle stiff opening at first and some blade play when closed. Once opened it feels rock solid.

The Last Gerber(s)

Gerber Flatiron, I must admit, I had no small expectations for the Flatiron, making it into the "Best Folding Knives" in the "Best Knives" section on BHQ. When I first opened it up I was immediately impressed by how solid the Flatiron felt in hand. Under closer inspection, the blade certainly looks intimidating and has a stonewash finish that is tough to scratch. The knife is ergonomic read more and feels good in the hand. The action is fairly smooth, with a secure lockup. Closing the Flatiron is a little tough but can be managed with one hand. For the cons, the blade is far from razor-sharp like most people first assume and I guess I am just a little "cleavered out". The Flatiron is just chunky and feels as such in your pocket. It has a real stinker of a pocket clip and with the slick aluminum scale, could really benefit from some gimping. I actually got my hands on the Tan G-10 Flatiron version, and to my dismay, I could neither open nor close the knife with one hand. The knife was a terrible stiff mess. So it is difficult to segregate the knives from each other. Still, after all that, the Flatiron is one of my favorite Gerber knives. It is tough, soundly build, and looks impressive. 76/100

Solid Pocket Cleaver at Small Price

Solid design and feel with great lock up. Comfortable to hold and use for a variety of tasks. I really like the wider stubby pocket clip because it's easier to access the knife when you need it, unlike a deep carry knife. And I can only assume that the reviewers who are saying it is impossible to open one handed have small and weak hands because I've had no problem opening it with read more my meat hook.

Thing is built like a panzer tank. The blade gets a little wobbly and dull. But hey it's a dang clever

Flat iron flop?

Just bought one a few days ago for work will see how it goes. This knife is designed really strange.One- handed opening is impossible and the blade sticks out way too far when the knife is closed.. the belt clip is way too stubby. Gerber may have a miss on this one

I have worked with knives my entire life as a navy boswainmate and bosun in the us merchant marine. I have used many folders from gerber, this one is the worst. The egde cracked off after slicing an onion. I recived this knife in a battlbox. This one i believe is dangerous to use. I encourage any one who has this folder to return it to gerber for something else. Doug andrews ret. read more Bosn us merchant marine.

I've had this knife alittle over a week. Can't find anything to dislike about it. Good balance, easy to open with one hand, easy to sharpen, very sturdy and well made. Better get one, you won't be disappointed.

Pretty Decent Knife

Nicholas s.

I was hoping this knife would be better than it was, but it's not too bad. Its a very large knife and has a large and very usable finger choil. The thumb hole is kinda weird and its hard to flick open as well as a Spyderco, but you certainly can with or without gloves. I imagine it's a great tool for hard work, but I do not do the type of work that I'd need a huge cleaver. By the read more way, the blade is very very thick. The construction is pretty good and centering is nice. The pocket clip is real weird and kinda sucks. I was hoping this would be a smaller size and an awesome carry, but its decent at best.

Great EDC!

I love this knife! I've been carrying this knife everyday for over 6 months! It's great for any task you can throw at it! It was very stiff at the beginning but it finally loosened up. I would love to see a premium steel version with a flipper!

Fun to play with

Daniel L.

I got one of these in a Battlbox a couple months ago. It's a little hefty. The detent makes it hard to open with a thumb. It's easier to pinch the blade between your thumb and middle finger to disengage the detent and then fling it open. The steel is sub par in my opinion but it's fun to have a cleaver to play with. Fit and finish needs some work but at least it locks up nice.

Very stiff

Jason G.

Knife came very stiff.... Not sure if it was bc it was over tightened or a wonky washer or what but I took it a part, lightly cleaned, sanded and oiled it and put it back together. It made a world of difference.... I keep it my camping pack for food prep. Sturdy blade but it will need maintenance for sure....

I’m Torn...

There are things I love about this knife and things that drive me nuts.

First the good. It’s a very aesthetically pleasing design. The hollow grind is really nice with the chunky spine. I don’t mind the cheaper steel on a $30 knife, let’s me practice my sharpening skills more. The black wash finish is really pretty.

Now the not so good. While the cutout is visually read more appealing it is darn near impossible to open with one hand. I almost always open it with two. You can get it started and then give it a little flick of the wrist and it will snap open, but the frame lock is so tight that it becomes painful to push it to release and close. Speaking of tight this is without a doubt the tightest pocket clip I’ve ever had on a knife. It’s almost impossible to get it clipped into your pocket with one hand.

That said it’s pretty and gets a lot of looks and comments when you pull it out but it needs a lot of refinement. I’m saving up for a Spyderco Roc

Cool knife

Had seen theses online for a little while and finally decided to bite the bullet and grab one. Couldn’t love it more. Didn’t have any negatives like in the other comments. Love the pocket clip and I can open it one handed no problem

Cleaver

I bought one of these because I didn’t want to pay a ton of money on a cleaver style blade.... with in the following days I believe I about 8 more. I was told by a local firearms dealer that Gerber planned to up the price and thought I would stock up before it happened.

I love the knife and wanted more so I didn’t have to baby just one. I carry them EDC and while on read more duty LEO. I like
To rotate between knives but this style is what I come back to but now that I had multiple
I wouldn’t mind if I misplaced a few. Fast forward months and the first one i bought is holding up perfect the imperfections worked themselves out ( the pocket clip is EXTREMELY tight and you gotta force it on your pocket and may be a little rough to open at first). I gifted multiple ones I stocked as gifts for family and friends that also EDC them everyday mostly work outdoor and they swear by them.

It’s a great budget cleaver

Hunter G.

Some nice design touches and a strong figure with great ergonomics to boot. Good design done well. Blade steel could be a bit better but the price reflects that so I can’t rag on it for that to much. Just a consideration for the future. I have taken mine hiking and camping and it’s great for food prep and feather sticking.

Very cool looking knife. Super stiff lock

I expect nothing and still i'm let down

Timothy M.

All I wanted out of this knife was to have a cleaver style knife that opens, locks, and closes. This knife barely does two of those.

The action is gritty and stiff (which was expected) but once the knife is open there is large amounts of blade play. The lockbar is so stiff it is a pain to close, somehow Gerber managed to make a knife that is both stiff and loose at the same read more time. Even after tightening the screws and adding a little lube it still is to date the worst knife I have owned.

I remember why I don't buy gerber knives

Justin L.

I was excited for this knife because it was a clever style blade for an affordable price.

The Good:
- Build: feels tough and no blade play

The Bad:
- Poor Detent: you can shake the blade out easily
- pocket clip: I can't get this on my jeans out of the box. Super stiff.
- Width: Wider than expected when the blade is closed.

I can't recommend this read more knife unfortunately, but it was a good idea. Just a bit off the mark on execution.

Cool design but needs work.

Jeffrey M.

I really like the design of this knife but that’s where my liking stops. Hard to open one handed, lock is hard to operate, and had to bend the clip out some to get it to clip on the pocket. I would gladly pay more money for better fit and finish. Maybe a flipper and better bearing option? Again, cool design just needs some work.

Good but not great.

Jonathan M.

Was very hesitant because I’ve never had a Gerber that worked well. I am a sucker for cleavers and decided for the price it was worth the risk. Turned out to be well worth it. For the price it is an awesome knife and the only downfall is like others have said is opening one handed is difficult. I put a zip tie on the hole and it’s made one handed opening much easier. If you’re read more on the fence about this one I say go for it.

Great Knife

Michael S.

Definitely a great knife for the price. The belt clip is a little stiff but it seems to be great now. Nearly zero play in the blade. The g10 feels great. Blade sharpness wasn’t the greatest but, sharpened it up doing well now, and come on it’s a cleaver can’t go wrong.

Entry Cleaver

I ordered this the day it was released. I received it today. I have been wanting a cleaver, but I didnt want to spend a lot of money for something I may not like. I'm sold on cleavers, they are quite functional. I like the grip, and the finish of the metal parts. My only gripe is that the pocket clip is super stiff.

Razor Sharp

Riley H.

This knife is awesome. Feels great in the hand, and comes razor sharp out of the box. I received it and immediately started to use it and put it through its paces. It's a little tough to open one handed, but I'm guessing with time it'll open easier like other Gerber products I own.

Awesome Gerber for the $

Landon C.

I'd like to say, this is definitely the direction I'd like to see Gerber's EDC knives to continue in. Framelock, Overtravel Stop, Awesome fit and finish at a competitive price. Sure, it's not the greatest steel, but man, absolutely a bang for your buck. No blade play, excellent lock up, awesome feel. I'd like to see the opening hole be either widened, or have a flipper option, because read more the hole is a bit tricky to learn, and like to rough up the thumb pads. Put it this way: if this was US made, with S30V and had a semi-improved opener, I'd easily pay $150. Awesome design, super comfortable. Reminds me of an Impaler with the cleaver/wharncliff blade. Just badassary. 4 stars all day.
