Rust ??

I bought this knife back in Oct. of 2020 and it's been with some of my other knives in a drawer in my bedroom. I opened it up this morning to find RUST along the top of the blade !! Very disappointing as I have other knives from Blade HQ that I carry every day and are wonderful. At least now I know not to use this knife for anything important.

Decent Design, poor execution

As the title suggests, I was looking forward to getting this knife. However, it arrived with significant blade play, lock stick, hardware that strips before it can be unscrewed and unsurprisingly, an uneven bevel. The pocket clip isn't great, it doesn't fit well on thicker reenforced pockets. The blade is a nice shape and seems to cut well enough when resharpened.

A good knife but...

I use this knife daily for work. I chose this knife because I despise flippers and it is one of the few choices left.

Everything about the design is great for its use. I find it very easy to open one handed using my thumb contrary to many reviews.

I usually find edges not up to my standard of sharpness. Putting the knife on my edge pro quickly revealed the edge bevel read more was not symmetrical, nor even. Quite a bit of grinding with a diamond plate using the sharper bevel left me still not able to get the steeper side to burr. That side had been ground on a radius. To save time, steel, and diamonds, I put a double bevel on it. Nice sharp and durable edge. I expect to have to sharpen the knife but the uneven bevel cost a star.

Stripped Pivot Screw and Loose Blade

Pros: The blade is fairly sharp out of the box and has an excellent satin finish. The micarta scale looks almost exactly like in the picture and the satin-finished pocket clip and lockbar stop provide a nice contrast against the matte grey steel frame.

Cons: The blade has a lot of play right out of the box and is nowhere near centered when closed. It was also fairly stiff read more to open. When I tried to tighten the pivot screw and reduce the blade play the screw was stripped almost immediately. I used the same CRKT pivot screw tightener I've been using for months now, but the screw's metal was so soft it was stripped before I realized it.

This is especially odd because the other Flatiron I own (the version with an aluminum scale) has never had any of the above issues despite a few months of use and tinkering with the pivot screw.

Conclusion: My experience wasn't the best and I wouldn't recommend this knife to a friend. Definitely not worth the money I paid for it.

Had to return it

The good: LOVE the micarta, although definitely nowhere near as blue as in the photo - much more muted/grey - also a bit on the slippery side. Loved the length of both the blade and the handle. Didn't mind the weight based on the size of the knife.

The bad: The action was terrrrible and it wasn't centered. Blade arrived quite dull. The clip was so stiff I couldn't open it read more to even put it in pocket.

Really wanted to love it, its a shame.

Interesting Knife

I only recently got serious about knife collecting. The Geber Flatiron is my first knife that has a cleaver style blade and micarta scales. It's an interesting knife that is sure to be a conversation starter. The frame lock is solid, but it is going to put a callous on your thumb if you are one to use your knife very often. It feels great in the hand, especially when you choke up read more on the choil and the micarta is exactly how I hoped it would feel - not too grippy or slippery. If I could give it a 4.5/5.

This is the Flatiron I have been waiting for.

I really like this knife and I am glad Gerber made this version. I am so glad they came out with the D2 version and the micarta is a really nice bonus. This is one sweet knife.

Big and Pretty

I had been holding out on trying a cleaver blade since I saw this D2/Micarta model was coming. I'm glad I waited. It looks great. The micarta isn't the most grippy, but it's not slick like the Elementum micarta. It feels good. I have XL hands and can easily get a 4 finger grip without choking up to the finger choil.

It came centered and just under hair shaving sharp. Lockup read more is solid. I would not call the blade finish satin. It is definitely polished. I was hoping to be able to spydie flick it open, but it's too stiff. I tried loosening the pivot, but you can't get it loose enough without getting the blade way off center.

Overall a great knife. Probably a little too heavy and bulky in the pocket to become a frequent EDC for me, but it's definitely fun to use.
