MagnaCut vs S30V: chemistry is the starting point.

Crucible’s MagnaCut design eliminates chromium carbides from the heat-treated structure. S30V instead balances its chemistry to favor vanadium carbides over chromium carbides.

How does MagnaCut chemistry differ from S30V?

MagnaCut has less nominal chromium and vanadium than S30V in the producer records below, and its sheet also lists niobium and nitrogen. Both are described as stainless steels. Total chromium content alone misses the central difference: how the alloy distributes chromium after heat treatment.

Why does eliminating chromium carbide matter?

Crucible explains that MagnaCut retains small vanadium and niobium carbides without chromium carbide in its heat-treated microstructure. The sheet connects that design with toughness, wear resistance and improved corrosion resistance. S30V’s document describes favoring vanadium carbides, rather than eliminating chromium carbides; this is a different design goal.

Which catalog knives put these designs into products?

MagnaCut appears in the Kershaw Bel Air 6105, current Link 1776OLSW, Hogue Deka 24379 and Spyderco Native Chief Salt C244PYL records. The Benchmade Bugout 535 provides the catalog’s S30V example. The Link needs a generation check because Kershaw identifies older production as 20CV.

Does the MagnaCut design establish a universal steel ranking?

It does not: the producer’s microstructure explanation is a material-design claim, not a ranking of all finished knives. The saved search ranking question needs hardness, geometry and application conditions that a composition comparison does not hold equal. Read Crucible’s test conditions before applying its charts to a specific purchase.

Can this answer the S30V versus 420HC search question?

This page compares MagnaCut with S30V; it does not supply a common S30V/420HC cutting test. The Buck 110 catalog identifies 420HC if that separate product comparison is your next question. The other saved questions about Elmax equivalence and Damascus performance require different material and construction evidence.
