About Spyderco R

The R Nishijin folder is a 2012 sprint run that is based on the original C67 “R” released by Spyderco in the 1990's that featured a skeletonized handle and blade resembling an Erector Set. The new Sprint Run “R” variant instead, has a solid blade and handle. The blade is full-flat ground VG-10 steel with jimping perched behind the round hole on the spine, and again on the bottom finger choil, to enhance both grip and control. The back lock handle is built with skeletonized steel liners and feature Japanese Nishijin glass fiber scales. The name Nishijin references a specific weave pattern, used in the production of silk Kimono cloth. It is manufactured by weaving glass fibers (thinner than a human hair), together in a geometric pattern and then impregnating the fibers into polymer base. The outcome is a lightweight, ultra-strong handle material that has an attractive three dimension appearance.

Larger blade but still feels good in pocket.

Todd G.

I love larger blades. I am a larger guy at 6'6" and around 270+ lbs. I don't feel right carrying and using a small pocket knife as they just feel TOO small. I have a couple of other Spyderco knives. I am not a fanboy but definitely like them.

I am really liking these newer lightweight designs.
I have an Endela, a couple of Endura 4, and a couple of others which are nice read more and I carry them but they are slightly on the smaller size. When I saw this Resilience I knew I had to try it. Placed an order for this and some knife oil and got them yesterday.

This is definitely my favorite out of all the Spydercos I have now and maybe towards the top of all the knives, I have in my collection. I have had a lot of experience with it since I just got it yesterday but I handled it for a long time yesterday and carried it for a while and feel comfortable making those statements. I will admit I like the 'lock back' on the Endura slightly better than the liner lock on this resilience but I am fine with it. That is just a preference thing.

I highly recommend this knife. I rarely write reviews for knives but I like this one enough to break that habit. It is very nice.

The Best

So glad to have finally bought my replacement Roadie. I lost my first at a concert in an attempt to hide/ditch prior to entry, which failed, as some lucky person found and kept it. Tried to replace it with two different Ladybugs (HAP40 & K390), which were perfectly fine in their own right, but I still wasn't as happy as with my good 'ol Roadie. In my opinion, it's The Best keychain read more knife on the market. And with its well-placed 'dimples' - a superb design - provide a natural deployment. Its Böhler N690Co blade comes razor-sharp out of the box and is easy to maintain as well. The jimping above and below (blade and finger choil respectively) give a solid purchase, and the half stop provides a safety feature many other slip joints, miss. It behaves and works much larger than it appears. You'll end up using it more often than you'd think because of that.
I'd give a sixth star if it were an option.

Worth a look

This knife is a powerhouse that flies under the radar. The design is a small but appreciated improvement for one-handed closing of a backlock knife without a finger choil (using my Endura for comparison). If Spyderco makes a version with a leaf shaped blade it will be a must buy. The hole in the pocket clip is for accessing the pivot screw if you carry your knife tip down.

|I like this thing a lot but I love it for food prep. It is just a nice long blade with a lot of blade and it realy works well for food prep.

Overall it's very good.

I like Wharncliffe / sheepfoot style blades and this one caught my eye. The shape of the handle affords a good, comfortable grip. And, the blade is easy to open and quite a solid piece of metal. It arrived shaving sharp. The only detractor for me is that the pocket clip has a hole in it for a lanyard. The problem is that the lanyard hole on this knife is not under the clip. I know read more that Spyderco makes a different style of clip with no hole. Not sure why they didn't use it on this knife. It kind of gives it a cobbled together kind of look that is not aesthetically pleasing. A minor gripe, but a little irksome.

Resilience

Graham H.

I returned a Spyderco Tenacious that I was somewhat underwhelmed by. My Resilience was free from Blade HQ during National Knife Day promotions when my order exceeded either $200 or $250, I can't recall. I do prefer the Resilience to the Tenacious. It's only $8 more on the website. The Resilience offers a significantly longer blade (think cheap version of the Spyderco Military) and read more also more handle real estate than the Tenacious. Although I'm not really into that tactical look all that often, I do wish the Resilience was offered in a blacked out version with a coated black blade. My one criticism of the knife is fairly large - the blade feels rather big and unwieldy compared to the Spydercos that I'm used to. Perhaps it's my imagination, but I'm always more concerned about cutting myself on its edge whether I flick it open or just open it more slowly with my thumb. I also feel like it's a bit too much blade to show off in public or to have on an EDC in that it may alarm some non-knife folks. That said, it feels like a noticeably better knife than the Tenacious at only a few dollars more, even if they are similar materials.

A "Must Have" knife

Despite the materials aren't top quality, but it's very well made, works well and does the job excelent, as almost all spider models.

Pleasantly surprised

I got this knife while bladehq offered it free with certain purchases. I had not previously purchased any spyderco knives for myself because I wasn't sold on the signature spyder hole. However I find that I really enjoy using this knife. it has great utilitarian value because of its wide, thin and flat ground blade that offers very little resistance through most materials.
I read more typically carry knives tip up, however I think this knife is more practical to carry tip down for the quickest deployment due to the length of the handle.

Most underrated knife of all time

this is all the knife that most people need. It disappears in a pocket or purse. the finger choil makes it easy to use and secure in the hand. I would recommend this knife to anyone. Great option for new knife users.

Finally an EDC for The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

This is a really awesome collaboration between Spyderco and Sweeney Todd--wait, no that isn't right...

Panchenko is one of my favorite (newer-ish) knife designers. He has a very distinct aesthetic that works well even though sometimes you wouldn't think so by looking at it. This thing actually works as an EDC and while VG10 might not be the flavor of the week, it's one of read more my favorites because it's very predictable and very easy to maintain.

If you like something a bit off the beaten-path, give this "brave-man's shaver" a try.

Perfect utility folder

bought one 5 years ago and found it perfect for camping trips. blade is full flat ground and very wide. perfect for food prepping. it is slightly large for EDC but for what it's capable of doing it is perfectly sized.

Great but 1 problem

Michael M.

This is an amazing small knife. The combination of the finger choil and it being a slip joint is genius. The finger choil gets rid of all insecurities while using the knife, not to mention that it is also ergonomic despite it's small size. My only issue is it have really sharp edges, mainly the spine of the knife. I actually cut myself on the spine before the cutting edge. But this read more is fixable with some low grit sandpaper or a sharpening stone. Overall this is my new favorite slip joint knife. If you want a slip joint knife, look no farther.

Great low cost Spyderco

This is the Tenacious on steroids and is a great, large, budget Spyderco. Really good quality and ergonomics on a lower cost Spyderco using a decent working steel g10 grips and stainless liners. Awesome option.

Great little knife!

Was wanting a slip-joint style knife for work, and this thing is awesome. Great ergonomics for such a small knife and disappears in the pocket! Only thing keeping it from a 5 star knife is the blade's edge isn't ground the same on both sides. Impacts the way it cuts a bit, but for what the knife is made for it doesn't really matter. Just a little nitpick of mine. LOVE the knife read more otherwise!

The Best New Blade Style

I love the cleaver style blades and this knife has everything I could want in an EDC blade. Deep pocket, right hand, tip up carry is essential for a good knife for me and good looks help. This knife hits all four with ease.

The knife that got me into Spyderco

Nathan H.

I got this a few years back as a gift from my wife.
I give it 3 stars, but that's comparing it to the Pm2.

It's a good knife made of ok materials. The lock is a bit softer than that on comparable American spydercos. The g10 isnt as grippy either, it feels more plasticky. But, for what it is, it is an excelent knife. Itll give you the general feel of a spyderco if you're read more like me and have very little spare cash. It's a good way to see how you like the spydie hole and ffg blade before pulling the trigger on a pm2.

Now my pm2 may have replaced this, but what it does that the pm2 doesnt, is bushcraft. The spine is so sharp that it throws gobs of sparks from a ferro rod. Much more than my pm2 or manix 2. Pluss it's cheap enough that it doesnt hurt to be rough with.
I'd recommend this knife as a good starter or beater. But if you have a bit more, definitely get the pm2

Excellent large EDC!

I got this as a replacement/improvement for my Gerber Icon, which developed some pretty bad blade play. This knife was my introduction to higher end knives, even though 8Cr13MoV isn’t the best steel. I love the Spydey hole, and it has become one of my favorite deployment methods! There could have been some more champfering on the spine and around the Spydey hole, just to take read more it down from a 90 degree angle. Overall though, this is an excellent knife!

My Sunday Carry

This is what I carry when I'm wearing slacks and such that won't accommodate a pocket clip. It's a fun blade with tons of cutting power. Sharpens up nicely too.

Great Purchase!

Throughout my collection of knives, I’ve never really been interested in Spyderco but this knife really got me interested into the brand. The knife is not only very budget friendly but also comes out of the box extremely sharp and ready for use. The steel on this knife although not the best can definitely hold an edge for a very long time with extensive use, and the length of read more this blade makes slicing tasks very easy. The G10 handle scales on this large knive gives you a lot of real estate when using it on various tasks and definitely will not go anywhere. Overall this is a very good knife and will be in my knife rotation for a very long time.

Awesome head turner

The cleaver blade turned some heads when I pulled it out and started up some conversations about it but mine just doesn’t hold an edge that well so only cause of that it’s a 4 star from me

Awesome Cleaver

Christopher M.

I have had this blade for almost 6 months now and I absolutely love it. I love how it looks like a straight razor. The blade stock on this knife is super thick and you really get this feeling that you could do any with this knife. I am normally a S35vn steel guy and VG-10 steel is typically a steel I usually don't really go for but I have had no issue with it. The grip is on the read more small side for my hands but with the overall shape and how it contours in your hand you forget about the thiner scales. It does have a really good shape. Overall this is super slick box cutter and I always get some head turns when I do the spidey flick. Totally recommend adding this to the collection.

In terms of an absolute slicer and large edc, this might be the best one. Not only does it not break the bank, but it won't weigh down your pocket either!

Good conversation piece

I have loved this design for year and finally saved enough to buy this knife. Whenever I bring it out people instantly want to know more about it, and aren't as scared of it as more traditional knifes.

Fantastic and Eye-catching!

Cameron B.

This knife came sharp, stays sharp, and becomes sharp after I somehow dulled it after cutting boxes for what seemed like an entire day. I've carried this to work, running errands, going to church, and the clip on it is amazing. The high grind on the cleaver blade makes it an amazing slicer. The only reason I'm not giving it four stars is because if you're not around knife people read more and you take it out, you get some weird looks. It's also a bigger knife, not the biggest but bigger so wearing it with slacks or a suit isn't as nice. But amazing blade. This knife and my Benchmade North Fork are my go to blades!

Awesomely different

Miziel G.

This is a very fun and kool EDC, the blade shape is great and being able to really choke up and have control is been really helpful. It's easy to sharpen and it's completely different from what you normally see in pockets the only thing I'd change would be the lock I'd love this with a compretion lock!!!!

I really like this knife, out of box sharp, blade center is perfect, you would never believe it's not made in the U.S.A! I'm a Benchmade nut, but Spyderco is hard to beat. Once again Bladehq is the best!!

Like my very first knife, but so much better.

Mike B.

If you're like me, you began to drool when you first laid eyes on the Benchmade Proper, but were also hesitant to drop $115 on one, despite the quality... This little Roadie will fill that void. Arguably, a more well designed slip-joint. Great index choil/jimping, stays firmly open and closed, "Double Dent" is superior to any nail knick opening system... Also, unlike the picture, read more the black handle model does have a lanyard hole.

You need this knife

Andrew B.

I was a little skeptical about the Spyderco slip joint but now that I have it in my hand I can say that this little guy really feels like a lockback. The finger choil makes this blade surprisingly large, filling the hand just enough so you feel like you won't lose your grip.

This is the knife you pull out in front of non-knife people or scared politicians. It's legal everywhere read more in the United States and most of England. This is a small, durable, reliable folder that you slip into your pocket and forget about it until you need it. Everyone needs this knife.

Great Quality Buy

I really didn’t like Byrd knives because I really dislike the deployment hole. I think Spyderco really knocked it out of the park when they started making value knives under the Spyderco name rather than under the Byrd brand name.

This knife is a great value knife! Need a beater knife but want something visually similar to other Spyderco knives? This knife has you covered. read more The Resilience fits the large size in this line of knives (it’s siblings being the Tenacious, Persistence, and Ambitious).

Unique Blade

Sweet, Unique EDC knife shaped like a cleaver.
Be-warned, it does rust or corrode fairly quickly unless you apply oil/lubricant on it. But other than that, it came sharp and it's an awesome EDC.

Same great G-10 grips as my Military. The blade is sharp. Same quality as my USA Spyderco just made in China. Time will tell if the lesser steel will hold up but I am happy with it as of now.

I like a lot of things about the knife. It feels great in the hand, comes with a great factory edge, lockup is strong, and has a great traction plan. The only thing I don't really like about it is the pocket clip, which rides too high. Overall a great knife. Well suited for defensive applications, food prep, camping, but is a little large for EDC in my mind.

Great knife

Wyatt S.

I really like this knife. It came razor sharp and it's just a beastly folder. It's a bit odd but the design is well thought out. My only complaint is the washers. For the money I think spyderco could've put some phosphorous bronze washers in instead of nylon. Other than that, it's a great knife

I picked this up a bit ago and let me just say that I am beyond impressed. Before I got this knife, I was carrying a Kershaw skyline as my EDC. Once I got this knife it instantly become my new EDC. It is comfortable in both the pocket and the hand. 5/5 definitely worth the money.

One of the coolest knives I bought lately I on microtechs, Benchmades, spydercos, zts, etc... you name it I probably got it and this is one of the funnest knives I've gotten in a while just because of the unique blade... awesome little finger Lopper

A great one but an odd one.

Jose A.

I recently purchased this and it took a little bit to get used to. The handle is nice and gripy. Opening the blade room me a minute to get used to. I usually click open my Spydercos. After a couple times carrying it opening fully with my thumb became second nature. I recommend it to those who want something different. However if you want something familiar to what common folders read more are, then you should think twice about purchasing this. To those who are interested in new and different style knives (as I am) this knife is for you. I love this thing now. 100% happy I made the call and purchased it.

Should have been named the Excellence

Randall K.

Because excellence is what this knife is. Does it have the "best" blade steel? No. Titanium liner lock? No. This is a very affordable, no frills, bells or whistles knife. With a cutting edge of 4 1/4" this knife is larger than a sog seal pup fixed blade. The full flat grind and that huge cutting surface just begs for something to cut. Like a Ferrari looks fast while parked this read more knife looks like it might take your finger if you look at it the wrong way. The clip does its job and its creative design allows for 4-way clip carry without relocating or sacrificing the lanyard hole. The lanyard hole is just big enough for paracord to pass through once, or, if the inner strands have been taken out, you can pass a loop through.

The spine of this knife is nothing to shake a leaf at either, the angle is technically more acute than 90 degrees and you can feel it. Works great to your advantage if you ever want to throw sparks from a ferro rod. I use the spine of the knife fairly often without even deploying it, it's just not always necessary.

Speaking of deployment: It's a Spyderco. Big hole and big handle allows for you to use your thumb or index finger to rapidly swing this big blade out, and the liner lockup leaves nothing to be asked of. And the sound is literally note worthy. Crisp and lock, it almost actually makes a whoosh noise before the lock up resounds its' confirmation. My coworkers know the sound of this knife and that should speak volumes.

Out of all my many knives, this is my EDC. It's exceptionally light for its size, fits my slightly larger than average hands well, is thin enough to barely notice in the pocket and still allow the use thereof, takes an edge worthy of the kitchen and deploys perfectly, every time. Without fail this knife goes where I go.
