This WILL Compete With Microtech!

Randy S.

The Guardian Tactical line is unique, innovative, and rugged. Being a dedicated supporter of Microtech knives due to their attractive looks and rugged build, I first noticed the GT 035 in a disassembly video where I got a look at the monster blade locks used! GT also uses a guide plate bolted onto the blade to align and guide the blade, and act as a locking surface for the giant read more blade locks. Blades locks are the true heart of DA OTF knives and clearly, the designer at GT was paying attention! I wish more DA OTF knife makers would!
The GT035 is in the price ballpark of the MT UTX85, or bottom-end UT. Quality is superb! The fit and finish are superb! Feel in the hand is superb! The asymmetric launch button with heavy, thick-ribbed gimping is superb! Because the GT lacks an add-on glass breaker, the handle is quite compact for the amount of blade thrown. There is a lanyard hole on the handle that doubles as a focused impact point for glass breaking.
When the launch button is pushed forward the first thing noticed is how SMOOTH it moves, and how little apparent force is required! I would rate it on par with the Infidel for smoothness of movement, and lightness of force! The blade comes out plenty fast and hard and it's one THICK blade! Measuring a whopping 3.95mm thick or just over 0.15" with a broad span, the blade is most impressive - more so I must admit than a UT or X85. On mine, the blade is a black stonewashed Tanto with a reverse ground tip and large lightning recesses milled below the spine on each side. The blade is clearly laser etched, "Elmax" to denote the quality of steel used, and the blade came razor sharp! There is more blade movement in all axis than I have found on my MT models, but it doesn't feel so much like "play" as a tolerance allowance because there is NOTHING "loose" about this knife!
I would submit that the GT 035 is the knife Microtech's Troodon should have been as the 3" blade Troodon is substantially upstaged by the GT 035!
Perhaps a better analogy would be: The Recon 035 is more in line with what you'd expect if the micro-Troodon were increased in size...the same beefy proportions and dimensions!
As everyone interested in Guardian Tactical knives already knows, they use a steel insert plate under the launch button, with the button riding on 3 miniature ball bearings and the result is smoother than any other DA OTF I've ever handled!
External markings are understated with Recon 035 on the left side below the launch button, and Patent Pending on the right. The pocket clip has the Guardian Tactical signature script with a nifty serial number for that added touch of class.
It would be easy for me to recommend the Recon 035 over the X85 or even UT, but then I already had those! All three are high-quality, ruggedly built knives, but I'd give the Recon 035 a slight edge in "tactical" just because of its less bold finishing and marking. I also think you get a bit more knife for the money with the GT 035.
Highly recommend!

The recon 035 is a BADASS OTF! To be honest I've only held very inexpensive knockoff otf's and the recon 035 is top notch. Guardian tactical makes a beast of an otf hands down. Quality is amazing and the price is spot on. This is the best bang for your buck if you want a high quality otf. I can't describe how good it actually is, you just have to get it in hand and see for yourself. read more You won't regret going with guardian tactical I promise

Stunning!

Smoothest action OTF I have ever used, owned, played with, etc. Razor sharp. Excellent build quality.

Great Knife

Love the knife, 1st day since it came in so take this review with a grain of salt...
Action is unbelievably smooth. Fair bit of play on the blade compared to the Microtech Ultratech but still not bad. Like the size of the dagger itself better than the Ultratech. Small nitpick is that when the blade is retracted you can still make contact at the surface with the tip only slightly read more but enough to cut. Overall great knife.

Wow. Smooth as butter

I had another OTF, but the activator switch was hard to push and very aggressive. I guess some like that; not me. The GT Recon 035 I got is ultra smooth and sure firing. It's well built and feels like superb quality in hand. Highly recommend it.

Love it

Super smooth and extremely sharp. Love the way that it handles. Glad I decided to purchase this knife.

Blade Play

Mark G.

Received this knife two days ago. The only issue I have is the blade play. Called GT and was told it's normal and nothing to be concerned with. The blade can actually be heard lightly rattling inside the handle if you shake it sideways. There's also play when the blade is deployed, all OTF's have this to a certain degree it's just a bit more with this one than any of my others.
Other read more than that it's great. Fires and retracts very smooth and slick, it's got the same kind of action a good trigger does, it can surprise you. Elmax blade hair popping sharp right outta the box.

No glass breaker is a plus

I love this knife. I had a Microtech UTX 85 before but hated the glass breaker. The lack of that is what sold me on the Recon and once I got it I found even more pros. The knife just feels better in hand IMO as well.

As Good as Microtech

Mike W.

I own several Microtech OTF's and love them. That said, I can say that this knife is on par with those knives. In fact, I find the deployment button a bit easier for me as I have larger hands and the button gives a bit more area for my thumb to actuate. There is a slight bit of blade play but OTF's will have that by design. The knife comes razor sharp and deploys smoothly and quietly read more with no spring noise. Pocket clip is appropriately snug without being difficult. Will likely purchase another.

Great OTF From Guardian

Doug L.

Super smooth action, solid lockup and came razor sharp out of the box. The example I received looked like it had been fired several times so maybe a previous return but it was in otherwise perfect condition.

It's a little more substantial than my Microtech UTX so a bit bigger to carry but definitely a solid product, highly recommended, and seems to be built to last.

Absolutely Incredible

This knife is silky smooth and delivers a satisfying pop every single time it is actuated. It has barely any blade play and is lightweight. It feels great in both the hand and the pocket. Comes out of the box hair shaving sharp.

Awesome Action

I own several OTF Knives from several Microtechs, two Benchmades Infidels, and two Kershaws. This knife surpasses all in smoothness of operation and quality of construction. The actuation switch having ceramic balls underneath riding on a hardened stainless steel plate is a work of Genius!
Size, weight and balance is Perfect!
I hope we'll see new models in different sizes. read more And a Lanyard hole - WOW!
Thanks So Much,

Great knife... but get the drop point blade

Luke D.

The Guardian Tactical Recon is an outstanding OTF, especially when compared to other offerings in the same price range. Fires hard, ultra smooth operation, and fit-and-finish is next to none.

Why four stars?

I originally purchased this tanto variation, and I was very pleased with it out of the box. However, the cutting performance left a lot to be desired IMHO. This read more wasn't my first tanto blade and I understand their quirks when it comes to using them in an EDC role. This blade just wanted to "wedge" versus "slice" for most things I cut with it. Lots of resistance.

Another thing that I found to be an annoyance with this particular blade design is the big fuller milled into the flat portion of the blade. It looks super cool, but it's also super deep, and it had a propensity for collecting a lot of debris from whatever I was cutting. I found myself constantly picking and cleaning it out before retracting the blade because I really didn't want all that gunk collecting in the mechanism.

After a few weeks, I decided to send my knife to Guardian Tactical and have them replace the blade for a stonewashed drop point blade. Sue over at GT was very responsive and helpful, and they got my knife back to me with a new blade within a few weeks after paying a fee for the new blade. The drop point blade is a MUCH better performer. It slices nicely, and the fuller is much smaller.

Tanto blade: four stars

Drop point blade: five stars easy!

Light to carry fun to deploy

This is a very snappy/sharp OTF and the most expensive one in my Collection. The blade has more play to it then I hoped for but less then most of my others. The only problem is the blade tip sticks out in the closed position. Not enough to be dangerous but enough to scratch your hand up if you retrieve your keys.

First OTF Knife

MICHAEL F.

This is my first OTF Knife (or automatic, for that matter) and I absolutely have fallen in love with it! The build quality is amazing, the action is satisfying, the fidget factor is through the roof (my wife has already yelled at me a few times for mindlessly playing with it), the ELMAX blade steel is awesome stuff, and I can't find anything about this knife to complain about. If read more I had to choose a con, it would be that I wish it was designed to be *easily* taken apart/field stripped for easy cleaning and oiling. All in all, I definitely would recommend this knife to any potential buyers, or anyone on the fence about getting an OTF for that matter.

Super EDC

It is nice to buy a product and feel that you have gotten more for your money than you paid. This is a great tool as well as just plain fun to carry. Very sharp out of the box and the action is as good or better than any of my other auto knives. Buy it, you can't do better.

Awesome otf

I love this knife. I've never been drawn to out-the-front knives because one, they are way expensive (for a good one) and 2, the blades always look wimpy. This knife not only looks amazing, but the blade is actually a little beefier than most out-the-front knives. And the Recon was razor sharp out of the box. Well done Guardian Tactical

I own many otfs and Use them at work, my recon has worked flawlessly. I love my microtechs and benchmades but all have malfunctioned in one way or another. The recon is going strong. My only complaint is the grinds at the base of the blade are sloppy but not a game changer. Will buy more.

Super smooth D/A OTF knife

Mark L.

I absolutely love this knife. Great size, blade shape, and light weight. Super smooth opening and closing and the thumb slide really does slide comfortably.
It doesn't take too much effort to move the slide, but it's enough effort that it isn't going to deploy unless you want it to. The blade shape is useful for normal cutting tasks and not just some sort of ninja dagger. If read more I was going to suggest improvements it would be nice to have a loop over deep carry pocket clip although not much of the knife sticks out of your pocket with the current clip design. It would also be nice to have an option for one of the wonder steels of the day like M390.

Wow! Quality, Quality, Quality

Look out Benchmade & Microtech. Guardian Tactical is in the house. If you want an awesome DA OTF then buy this knife. The Recon is just as the BladeHQ video says, smooth action of a Benchmade with the snap of a Microtech. I am very pleased with Guardian Tactical's Recon (Black, Satin) DA OTF knife. If you are even thinking about buying this knife, just do it, you won't regret it.

Sent it back...

I had HIGH hopes for this blade, given that it's made in america and was my first OTF that didn't have a lighter in it... Well... It started misfiring after less than a week of regular use, I.E., cutting cardboard at work...

Once again, we have another company marketing something toward military and law enforcement that turns out to be a toy... I can't recommend it. My 30$ read more lightning is still going strong, and I once batoned a piece of aluminum in half with it (please don't try that)...

Anyway... Save up and get a benchmade/michrotech/or a hogue if you want an OTF...

Great knife! But...

Ryan T.

I would love to give this knife 5 stars but I cant for one simple reason. It wasnt sharp. The primary job of a knife is to cut and this one barely did that. The rest of the knife is awesome, the action the fit and finish, the pocket clip, the ergos all awesome! I will say I do have another Gardian Tactical a Mini Helix which had a flawless edge. So I am sure this was a one off with read more the edge not being sharp however I still cant rate the knife higher.

My first good OTF

Dan M.

After seeing Microtech knives on youtube videos with their spring echo sounds after deployment, I was hesitant to buy at their prices. I saw this American made knife with great reviews and amazing looks... I HAD to buy one. This thing is amazing. I love the feel, and the action. It doesn't have a spring sound at all (yet? we'll see with age). It's fast and satisfying. The lines read more are sexy. The edge was not sharp out of the box, but it will open boxes and light work. This steel is a medium hardness with medium rust resistance. It's a great steel for everyday use. If you want to get a "Knife Guy" a knife as a gift without breaking the bank... You will NOT go wrong with this knife. Or just buy it because it's a sexy AF knife... Do it!

Wasn't quite sure at first

I just received this knife today. I took it out of the box and I pushed on the high quality and nicely textured button to deploy the blade. It popped out about 2/3 of the way and stopped. I flicked my wrist and it fully deployed and locked in its extended position. I tried to retract the blade and about the same thing. It pulled about 90% of the way back in but the tip of the blade read more was still exposed. I had to flick the blade out and try again. This happened several times and was convinced the blade finish was dragging on the frame and preventing complete deployment. I tried it several times and was seeing this failure to completely open or close about one in every 3 attempts. I got out some Tuf Glide lubricant and put a drop on each side of the blade where the blade met the frame when the knife was deployed and after a few opens and closes things now seem to be working. It's a great size and weight, really nice blade that is very sharp. The button to open and close is smooth as butter. It's going to take me a while to see if I can trust it to open and close reliably.

Not bad

Brandon B.

Cool little knife, just about the right size for this type of knife in my opinion. Smooth and snappy action, quality fit and finish. I was pretty disappointed in the blade itself though. It was super dull out of the box, sharpened it on my edge pro and to match the factory bevel I had to sharpen it at 25 per side, Ideally I like to keep mine around 20, so I'll probably reprofile read more it eventually. Not a biggie, if anything it should be a pretty rugged and durable edge.

Better then Microtech

Steve R.

I have 5 Microtech OTF knives, Troodon, Scarab, Ultratech, UT-X85, UT-X70.

I can say without hesitation this knife is better then all of them.

The action is FAR superior.
Perhaps due to tight tolerances, each of the Microtech's will eventually bind when trying to deploy or retract, even the Ultratech model.

This knife has not bound up yet.

My read more only suggestion is to avoid the black coating on the blade....get the stonewash instead.
The black coating on my knife is somewhat soft and fragile.
But that is my fault, I couldn't wait for the stonewash to come back into stock. :-)

The cutting edge was somewhere around 35deg and somewhat uneven when it arrived.
It was sharp. But not scalpel, mirror polished, sharp.
After an evening on the Lansky Diamond stones, it is 30deg and scary sharp.

Don't hesitate
Buy it.

So first things first, Im a LEO. I need my gear and edc stuff to be fail safe. Im a microtech guy, Ive had an ultratech on me for 10+!years, until now. Well kind of. My ultratech is now on my outside vest attached to molle and this is my new edc. Its about .5 shorter, 1/8 fatter than an ultratech- with the same size blade. The button is larger and much easier to find with gloves. read more The action is exactly like described in the video- combo of benchmade and microtech. I love this knife. Ive already cut zip ties and like any knife I had to work for it, its zip ties. But it was easy to find the button. Just buy it and if you dont like it, return it. Blade hq has an awesome return service, that was my original plan. But I did fall in love with the knife, and you will too.

Great OTF Blade

Mine came sharp, moves like butter. Smooth action in and out. Fantastic blade that is now my EDC.

4.5 out of 5

David K.

This OTF is different, which is one reason why I like it. The blade is thick for heavier tasks (and the design is very pretty yet standard) and the spring mechanism is very good. My only gripe is that for this price I'd like to see a better steel used like CPM-S35VN, CPM-20CV or other.

I purchased a Microtech Ultratech and returned it, did not work right at all. Eric told me about the GT Recon so I got the black one , well that's all he had but I love it, very smooth and quick, I have no rattles at all and I have 5 other OTF as well but this one is sweet. I carry it on a neck Lanyard I made with Paracord very easy to reach under my shirt and it's there, pull the read more lanyard off my head, very cool, or pull it off the ring.
