About Spyderco Native 5

Since its original release in 1997, the Native has been a mainstay of the Spyderco product line and a flAGShip of our American-made stable of Knives. The design has evolved steadily over the yeARS, reaching its current state of the art in 2012 with the release of the Native5. The latest addition to the Native lineage is the Native5 Lightweight, which combines the Native5’s engineering refinements with the weight-saving advantages of an injection-molded fiberglass-reinforced-nylon (FRN) handle. Proudly manufactured in our factory in Golden, Colorado, the Native5 features a spear point blade made from premium CPM S30V stainless steel. Its full-flat grind, distal taper, textured index-finger choil and thumb ramp, and understated swedge collectively offer a distinctive appearance and outstanding edge geometry and point utility. The blade is supported by a highly refined back lock mechanism that takes this time-tested lock design and elevates it to a new standard of engineering and manufacturing excellence. The linerless FRN handle features Bi-Directional Texturing for an ultra-secure grip and reduces the overall weight of the knife to a scant 2.5 ounces. The handle also houses four sets of threaded inserts molded directly into the FRN. These allow the improved hourglass clip to be positioned for left or right-side tip-up or tip-down carry. A generously sized lanyard hole also provides a handy attachment point for lanyards, fobs, and safety lines. A highly advanced evolution of a time-honored design, the Native5 Lightweight is an incredibly capable, pocket-sized cutting tool and a shining example of Spyderco’s commitment to making even our best products consistently better. NOTE: Spyderco updated this knife to S30v in summer 2018.

Official Easter Carry

Love that color — it’s an American Made Native jazzed up in M4, there’s not much more that needs to be said. A lot of bang for the buck, I’m quite happy.

This is my first Native 5. For a small knife it fits my large hands surprisingly well. Love the M4 steel and hope to see a black costed version from blade hq.

An Exceptionally Nice Native

Joe p.

This is my seventh Native 5. The first one is with CPM-M4. I do love the Native 5 for its size, shape, strong lock up, and user-friendly design. Now this one with the M4 and unique mint green scales is a nice addition to my EDC rotation. I’ve carried it very often over the past three months and am especially impressed with the performance of the M4 blade. Paired it with an MXG read more deep carry clip making it even more special. Excellent Quality, great price point, and super sharp edge from the factory. Highly recommend this offering from BladeHQ.

Great knife, interesting color

The Native 5 is one of the best edc knives that I have personally used. M4 is a fantastic steel but takes a but of care. The mint green is a bold choice but it grows on you. Makes a very interesting addition to any collection.

Mmmm… Minty!

So far I’m loving this knife. The Sage wasn’t for me but this one is, and for a better price coming out of Golden. QC is absolutely on point. Mine came legitimately sharp, and usually I’m critical with factory edges. Really enjoying the color as well. M4 for 119? I’m all in. The subtle stonewash on the clip is a very nice touch too, I’m sure the blade will patina nicely read more with it. Thanks BHQ!

Native 5 is better than the Delica!

Edward Bean

I have had many Delicas in my collection, it was always my go-to in LW carry. But, it did not have a forward choil, it was also a little long in the pocket. The Native 5 LW has a smaller imprint, a forward choil, and Maxamet steel just to name a few! I have to have them all!

Great Service, Wonderful Product

Grant Price

As usual, DLT’s service was prompt and flawless. The Native 5, as advertised, is light and very easy to carry in a pocket. I was a little worried that it has no liners, but that doesn’t appear to be a problem. The scales hold the blade very well. The knife also seems to benefit from its locking system, which appears to add to its rigidity. Highly recommended as a EDC knife.

A lot of people will say the delica is the best lightweight spyderco, if you've got bigger hands but still want something compact this one fills that role perfectly.

Native 5 fan

Have had a Native 5 in G10 & S90V for a few years and use it extensively. The sturdiness has impressed me as has the steel. Was never interested in a FRN version of such a thin knife after having handled the Benchmade Bugout, Delicas & other knives that feel flimsy to me. Recently got an older original Native with FRN’s and was pleased by the solid feel of it which led to this read more purchase. I was not disappointed. No flex on the handles and this was one of the sharpest factory edges I’ve gotten on any production knife. Don’t know why most manufacturers except Hogue can’t get this right. Nothing makes a better 1st impression better than a quality edge.
No evaluation of the steel since I just got it but if it’s on par with S30 or S35VN as most writeups claim I’ll be happy.

The ergos on this are fantastic. Also I keep this thing in my car all the time so I can always have a reliable knife anywhere I go. Good for a loaner knife and always a good backup.

All function

This knife has no frills, just function. It is an amazing cutting tool. The ergonomics are excellent and the blade geometry is perfection. Not a flashy choice, but a very useful EDC. I work in construction and carry this every day. I managed to snag the rex 45 version, but any version of this knife is awesome

What a great knife!

Owned this for almost a year so I thought it was time to put in my pennies.
Amazing fit and finish of course.
Perfect in the hand and jimping & choil let you ride up on the blade real nice.
I think it would be criminal to have any handle less than G10 but I do understand costs. I just can't stand the FRN feel. It's like putting plastic covers on your leather couch.
I read more do wish it would flick a little bit but I guess it is a price to pay for the super-strong locking back (which I wish my Para 3 could have).
I like the S30V a lot but my next Native will have S110V (like my Para which I find easy to keep sharp on stone).
I have to be carefull getting in and out of my 0000 with leather steering wheel. Both the Native and Para ride a little high and I have scraped the leather with the clips. Partially my fault since I like the seat to sit high.
Never have been a Spydie guy but warming up to the style. Have 3 and will add more.
Blade HQ is the only place to buy. Videos rock, site is fast, and service is great.

Excellent EDC

I purchased one of these for my son, who knows and loves quality knives. I've owned the original Native since 2007 and thought that he would appreciate owning one himself. He loves it and uses it every day. He is particularly fond of the feel; the finger choil, the lightweight, non-slip handle and the fact that he can easily open it with either hand. It also takes and holds an edge read more very well. Finally, the pocket clip is sturdy, so he's not worried about losing it. This is a great knife!

Perfect for my EDC

I really like the size and weight of this knife. Unfortunately, I struggle with company policy on what I can carry and also wear slacks. This knife is just slightly heavy (barely) then my benchmade bugout. Now I have two great knives to chose from.

First one!

Marin B.

I bought this knife many years ago. It was my first one. I am an outdoorsman, EDC fan, training in Krav Maga and ex military. from Croatia. I have cut everything with it. Handle is FRN, very comfortable, but easy to damage. Blade is plainedge, long hold and easy to sharp. I am a small man with small hands and it fits perfectly. Would recommend.

This knife in on par with the delica for form and function. It's ~$20 more, but its made in USA, and has better materials. An awesome knife that finds its way in my pocket pretty often.

I love this knife. I reviewed and reviewed and waited six months to finally go for it and I was an idiot! I should have got it sooner!
Lightweight, sharp right out of the box and works great from me in daily use.
I highly recommend this knife to anyone looking for a great knife that is lightweight with good steel.

I love the Native 5 FRN - very light, yet it feels very reliable in the hand. Very good quality steel and comes very sharp. The grip is excellent! The click it makes when you open it is a bit too loud, but I’m fine with that. (I compare with Benchmade Fact, which is super silent). Very fast shipping and good packaging. Overall I’m very happy!

Outstanding Knife

I just received this knife today as a birthday gift from my wife. What a nice knife!! I own a paramilitary 2 & 3, and Tenacious. All of which are large knifes for me. This model is perfect in size, ergonomics, and weight. I did put an aftermarket deep pocket clip on it and it rides perfect. This is now my every day knife.

After having two other natives in frn, I was left longer for a higher end feel. The milling in the carbon fiber boosts this over the top, with a great steel to boot!

My Work Horse

PATRICK G.

This knife is the best work knife I've experienced. I do down and dirty underground confined space line work for phone companies across the country. This knife cuts through kevlar mule tape, in mud and sand, all day everyday as well as copper cable sheathing. I hand sharpen this beast once a week. I beat the living hell out of this and can't say it enough. I've never had a work read more knife last more than two days before now so this has been a huge plus. I open it wearing muddy gloves with ease and the factory pocket clip is great. If you need a work knife look no further.

Best Spyderco for EDC

Austyn O.

I have the S35vn Model.
I have been after this blade for at least 5 years. Got it little over 6 months ago new and well I love it. Nice strong blade. Backlock is solid and secure. The tip is thicker and more stout then most others. Holds a damn fine edge and its small enough and yet big enough to be a great EDC blade. I love it so much I am going to be adding a 2nd to have a read more back up if this ever goes out. Which I highly doubt it will. I highly recommend this great EDC blade!

Goldilocks knife

Nick O.

I bought the Native 5 LW a little over a year ago. Since then it has been my most carried knife. Easily beating out some of my more expensive knives for pocket time. Prior to buying the Native 5 LW, I had the inability to carry the same knife for more than two days back to back. Now I have a hard time justifying carrying anything else. To me the ergonomics are second to none and read more it practically disappears in my pocket. I work in an office and don't notice this knife wearing a suit or khakis. It's also the perfect blade size for me. Any bigger would be too big and any smaller would be too small. On thing to note, is I have the S35VN version.

Just a great knife

Travis W.

It should be noted that my Spyderco Native 5 LW is the S35VN model, but honestly, the blade steel isn't what makes this knife so incredible to me (well it is partially, but S30V would probably give me the same mind blowing step up from my previous knife's 15N20).

What's great is the form of this knife. It's lightweight and easy to carry. It meets my needs of being one hand read more open-able and close-able. It actually flicks open which is just awesome for a back lock. I like back locks because I can operate them with gloves on, so it's nice that this knife has one. The pattern on the FRN provides good grip. The ergonomics are just great. The blade has a tall flat grind that makes it pretty good at slicing in spite of it's relative beefiness.

Just... I love this knife. Can't recommend it enough. Maybe a CPM-20CV model is what the next sprint run should be? Or maybe I should keep saving my money to get the fluted carbon fiber model.

Excellent

This knife designed and built by Spyderco, is one of the most lightweight and user friendly knives I’ve ever owned. Weighing slightly under 3 ounces, you will be hard pressed to find a knife with this much useability that weighs less.

Austin F.

The fit and finish was perfect. The ergonomics were great, good traction plan, and jimping, contouring of the grip to lock in the hand was excellent. I love the forward choil for finer work. The knife fits great in the pocket. The action was smooth and no blade play. The down side was the FRN material, it felt cheap. Try the knife out in person, see it you can deal with the handle.

A little heavy for its size but still great

Austin F.

Ergonomically the Native 5 is great, if you are looking for a workhorse that also looks great this is a great small-midsized choice. There isn't really any extra bells and whistles as far as action goes, its pretty much always a slow opener and for me there un-spyderflickable (but that has more to do with design choice because it is a backlock). love the knife mine is s35vn and read more I have carried it a lot in the past 3 years.

My favorite spyderco I own.

Stephen H.

Out of all of my spyderco knives this is my favorite design. Not my favorite spyderco in my collection but my favorite to use. It’s built like a tank and the perfect size. It fits my hand perfect and is not so big that it gets in the way of itself. If spyderco will ever make a dragonfly 2 xl the exact size as the native 5 it will be by far my favorite.

I've had my native 5 in g-10 since New Years and so far has proven to be the one knife in my collection I can 100% depend on.... Not a great action show piece and not the best looking but defidentlty the best when it comes to functionality

Better than I could have hoped!

McKay K.

I absolutely love this knife! It is the perfect size for an EDC blade. I love how the finger choil lets you choke up on the blade and provides plenty of handle while still keeping the blade at a good length. I haven't handled the light weight model so I can't speak for that, but I love how solid the G10 version is!

Love it!

Evan L.

Just what I was looking for! Unfortunately Spyderco changed the standard Native steel to S30V so I contacted DLT and received a super quick response indicating I could buy their last one! This is probably my 12th purchase from them and their service and shipping time is the best in the business! Keep up the great work guys! Thank you!

Good Little Knife

Robert M.

It's a slick little blade. Good HANDLE feel. The ONLY flaw is if you're push cutting through something, the finger groove on the blade catches, but it's not that big of a deal.

Tremendous knife!!!

Fred s.

The more I use this knife the more I like it. it has replaced the Chaparral as my main EDC. To have such a lightweight knife cut so well is a joy.
The knife came sharp, but not hair whittling, using the Spyderco Ultra fine on the factory edge followed by wood stropping consecutively with 1.0, .5, .25 micron diamond spray changed this, without too much effort.
Also the dark read more blue FRN handle complements the S110V stunningly well.

CPM S30V

David A.

Be aware of the fact that Spyderco is moving this knife to S30V steel according to the March 2018 Byte news bulletin. Ask for S35VN steel while supplies last if you want it but there is not much difference in the steels according to Spyderco. The knife in either steel is a very robust and lightweight affair. Very happy with BladeHQ’s return service and friendliness on the phone.

I have carried my Native for years and it always held an edge even in hard use. EDC to my USMC days all the way up to when I broke the tip during misuse. It would still be in my EDC rotation if I had the blade repaired.

First Spydie

The Native 5 LW was my first Spyderco Purchase, and will certainly not be my last (already eye-balling a manix 2…). The knife was flawless out of the box, with superb fit and finish and a razor-sharp blade. The 3 inch flat ground blade is perfect for a variety of EDC tasks, from food prep to breaking down cardboard boxes. The s35vn blade steel also makes for a great EDC knife, read more as it holds its edge very well and can be resharpened easily with the right methods and materials. Although I tend to shy away from knives with fiberglass reinforced nylon or plastic handles, the handle on the Native 5 felt surprisingly solid. The bi-directional texturing offers a secure grip when removing the knife from the pocket and during use. Using the forward finger choil, the knife fits perfectly in my medium sized hands. At 2.45 oz, the knife carries extremely lightly, and you almost forget its there. The action was a little stiff at first, but has improved with regular cycling and a little bit of lubrication. A very good first experience with the brand.

Without a doubt, this is one of preeminent EDC's out there. Strong lock, great ergonomics, great steel and lightweight. There are simply just too many good things to say about it. Plus if your into taking your knives apart, this is one of the most simple ones to work with. I honestly can't think of a negative thing to say about the Native. At some point I plan on putting some micarta read more scales on mine. Don't hesitate to buy this guy. If I really had only one choice to carry a knife the Spyderco Native would be it.

Bought this bad boy over the counter at BladeHQ... and I LOVE this knife (carrying it right now). Great steel, super solid lock back, fit and finish are excellent, love the choil, gimping is just right, and blade shape is beautiful. One complaint is the fasteners on the pocket clip don’t hold it tight, so it rotates slightly... plus it’s not deep carry at all so it sticks way read more out of the pocket. I’ve been meaning to pick up an aftermarket deep carry clip for it. Regardless... I’d totally recommend it!

Perfect Pocket Pal

Grady W.

What a knife. This thing is my go to knife out of the dozens that I own. Super lightweight, great steel, perfect jimping, amazing ergonomics, awesome choil, and a low price.

It doesn’t get better than this.

I will say that spuderco’s approach to the lightweight model isn’t for everyone. There are no liners, which is completely fine as the knife is plenty rigid. read more And there are no washers, bearings or anything of the sort. The blade glides on raised portions of the frn. The action is surprisingly smooth considering this, but it’ll never be a silky smooth knife, which shouldn’t be expected from a back lock anyway!

11/10 buy it now!

I have carried a Spyderco, one gen or another, for the last 7 years. It is a great EDC knife. It's not scary, big enough for most tasks and it's a great deal for s35vn. I would recommend it to a friend, or a stranger.

I usually change knives every 3 or 4 months cuz I like to, and I thought I would try a Spyderco. Sharp right out of the box and it stayed sharp! Sadly, I lost this one, something grabbed the clip and it fell out of my pocket. Rest assured, I'll be getting another USA made Spyderco!

Great little knife! S110V holds a great edge and isn't as hard to sharpen as some of the other exotic super steels on the market. Fwd finger choil allows you to take an aggressive grip for superior control. Not flashy, but works really well.

Should be dubbed the Native 9.9 - It's nearly perfect!

Michael Brown

Classic styling and overbuilt construction are defined by this knife. Premium materials used throughout and every single piece is very thoughtfully designed and engineered. Fit and finish is spot-on. I have one small criticism - Spyderco installs a liner in the lanyard hole on cheaper knives, but not on this one. If they had done so, it would be a perfect 10...

Favorite EDC

I've had the lightweight for about 6 months now. And I have to say it has become my favorite EDC blade. Came Razor sharp and stayed razor sharp for a good while. The S35VN steel does take time to resharpen back to razor sharpness. But it is not to difficult with the right sharpener. I find myself carrying it more than my Griptillian, paramilitary 2, and kershaw skyline. You dont read more even notice it in pocket and the Ergos in hand feel great. I highly recommend picking this knife up. It is just one heck of a blade.

Very nice EDC knife

Robert L.

First of all, I'm left handed and carry my EDC knives in my left pocket, so some of my review won't apply to everyone. I carried a Kershaw Camber for several months and really wanted to like it. It's a great knife in most respects. However, the tip-up-only carry and essentially non-reversible pocket clip really made it difficult to safely carry left handed. After several holes in read more my pocket and a pretty good cut on my hand, it was time for something else.

I picked up a Spyderco Native-5 lightweight a few weeks ago and have been really happy with it. I prefer EDC knives in the 3" blade length range. I have larger hands and have no issues with the smaller handle whether using the finger choil on the blade or not. Blade shape is good. Deployment has more friction than other Spydercos I own, but I don't usually flick blades open anyway. It has a very solid looking lock. I like the CPM-s35vn steel so far. Sharpening has never really been an issue for me (I use diamond stones and 1200 and 2000 grit sandpaper), but it's significantly easier to reprofile the s35vn than s30v or ZDP-189. I carried a Delica for a long time, but didn't really like the relative lack of edge holding of the VG-10. Typical use for me is deburring or shaping wood, cutting glue off wood, food prep, and infrequent box cutting.
