About Spyderco Native 5 Lightweight Lockback Knife FRN (3" Satin) C41PBK5

This Native 5 has a lightweight black FRN handle and a full-flat ground S30V steel blade. The handle on the Native is patterned with two separate finger choils. The first choil, where the blade and handle meet, allow positioning the index finger closer to the knife's sharpened edge for control over the cutting surface. Behind the first choil, the second positions the hand farther back on the folder for dexterous cutting while pushing the blade away from you. Bi-Directional Texturing molded into the FRN handle form varying levels of steps minimizing forward or backward sliding. 4-way reversible pocket clip for ambidextrous carry.

Great Reliable Knife

The ergos on this are fantastic. Also I keep this thing in my car all the time so I can always have a reliable knife anywhere I go. Good for a loaner knife and always a good backup.

Excellent EDC

I purchased one of these for my son, who knows and loves quality knives. I've owned the original Native since 2007 and thought that he would appreciate owning one himself. He loves it and uses it every day. He is particularly fond of the feel; the finger choil, the lightweight, non-slip handle and the fact that he can easily open it with either hand. It also takes and holds an edge read more very well. Finally, the pocket clip is sturdy, so he's not worried about losing it. This is a great knife!

First one!

I bought this knife many years ago. It was my first one. I am an outdoorsman, EDC fan, training in Krav Maga and ex military. from Croatia. I have cut everything with it. Handle is FRN, very comfortable, but easy to damage. Blade is plainedge, long hold and easy to sharp. I am a small man with small hands and it fits perfectly. Would recommend.

Great knife with great pocket presence

This knife in on par with the delica for form and function. It's ~$20 more, but its made in USA, and has better materials. An awesome knife that finds its way in my pocket pretty often.

Absolutely the best EDC for me

I love this knife. I reviewed and reviewed and waited six months to finally go for it and I was an idiot! I should have got it sooner!
Lightweight, sharp right out of the box and works great from me in daily use.
I highly recommend this knife to anyone looking for a great knife that is lightweight with good steel.

Outstanding Knife

I just received this knife today as a birthday gift from my wife. What a nice knife!! I own a paramilitary 2 & 3, and Tenacious. All of which are large knifes for me. This model is perfect in size, ergonomics, and weight. I did put an aftermarket deep pocket clip on it and it rides perfect. This is now my every day knife.

Ordered this blade as a smaller carry while not at work. Can’t find anything wrong with the ergonomics or blade steel. Can’t recommend enough.

My Work Horse

This knife is the best work knife I've experienced. I do down and dirty underground confined space line work for phone companies across the country. This knife cuts through kevlar mule tape, in mud and sand, all day everyday as well as copper cable sheathing. I hand sharpen this beast once a week. I beat the living hell out of this and can't say it enough. I've never had a work read more knife last more than two days before now so this has been a huge plus. I open it wearing muddy gloves with ease and the factory pocket clip is great. If you need a work knife look no further.

My go to.

Been carrying knives for 15yrs and I’ve carried them all, and idk why but I keep coming back to spyderco, specifically the Native.
Been my edc for 5yrs.
Love it and it’s made in the USA.

I work in an office and don't want cause alarm when I reach for my knife for something. This is like a little Manix with a lock back. LOVE IT.

P.S. Gimme that axe, I'll put it to good use.

Thanks

This knife designed and built by Spyderco, is one of the most lightweight and user friendly knives I’ve ever owned. Weighing slightly under 3 ounces, you will be hard pressed to find a knife with this much useability that weighs less.

Just a great knife

It should be noted that my Spyderco Native 5 LW is the S35VN model, but honestly, the blade steel isn't what makes this knife so incredible to me (well it is partially, but S30V would probably give me the same mind blowing step up from my previous knife's 15N20).

What's great is the form of this knife. It's lightweight and easy to carry. It meets my needs of being one hand read more open-able and close-able. It actually flicks open which is just awesome for a back lock. I like back locks because I can operate them with gloves on, so it's nice that this knife has one. The pattern on the FRN provides good grip. The ergonomics are just great. The blade has a tall flat grind that makes it pretty good at slicing in spite of it's relative beefiness.

Just... I love this knife. Can't recommend it enough. Maybe a CPM-20CV model is what the next sprint run should be? Or maybe I should keep saving my money to get the fluted carbon fiber model.

Goldilocks knife

I bought the Native 5 LW a little over a year ago. Since then it has been my most carried knife. Easily beating out some of my more expensive knives for pocket time. Prior to buying the Native 5 LW, I had the inability to carry the same knife for more than two days back to back. Now I have a hard time justifying carrying anything else. To me the ergonomics are second to none and read more it practically disappears in my pocket. I work in an office and don't notice this knife wearing a suit or khakis. It's also the perfect blade size for me. Any bigger would be too big and any smaller would be too small. On thing to note, is I have the S35VN version.

Love it!

This is my worker knife, I've been carrying this for awhile and its great at slicing and its really nice and light. The lock on it is super solid and its just one of those knife you'll never have to worry about

Great knife

The Native 5 LW is a great knife. The ergonomics make it melt into my hand and the frn makes it disappear in my pocket. You won't know it is there. For me it is a perfect knife.

The Native is the best design, hands down. Of all the knives I own, I chose the Native to carry on my person on deployment. Bravo Zulu and keep em coming!

Good Little Knife

It's a slick little blade. Good HANDLE feel. The ONLY flaw is if you're push cutting through something, the finger groove on the blade catches, but it's not that big of a deal.

CPM S30V

Be aware of the fact that Spyderco is moving this knife to S30V steel according to the March 2018 Byte news bulletin. Ask for S35VN steel while supplies last if you want it but there is not much difference in the steels according to Spyderco. The knife in either steel is a very robust and lightweight affair. Very happy with BladeHQ’s return service and friendliness on the phone.

Simple but amazing

Such a simple idea but it is executed flawlessly with the great ergonomics and functionality. Pretty good steel.

Great folder with years of use!

I have carried my Native for years and it always held an edge even in hard use. EDC to my USMC days all the way up to when I broke the tip during misuse. It would still be in my EDC rotation if I had the blade repaired.

First Spydie

The Native 5 LW was my first Spyderco Purchase, and will certainly not be my last (already eye-balling a manix 2…). The knife was flawless out of the box, with superb fit and finish and a razor-sharp blade. The 3 inch flat ground blade is perfect for a variety of EDC tasks, from food prep to breaking down cardboard boxes. The s35vn blade steel also makes for a great EDC knife, read more as it holds its edge very well and can be resharpened easily with the right methods and materials. Although I tend to shy away from knives with fiberglass reinforced nylon or plastic handles, the handle on the Native 5 felt surprisingly solid. The bi-directional texturing offers a secure grip when removing the knife from the pocket and during use. Using the forward finger choil, the knife fits perfectly in my medium sized hands. At 2.45 oz, the knife carries extremely lightly, and you almost forget its there. The action was a little stiff at first, but has improved with regular cycling and a little bit of lubrication. A very good first experience with the brand.

Fantastic Knife

Without a doubt, this is one of preeminent EDC's out there. Strong lock, great ergonomics, great steel and lightweight. There are simply just too many good things to say about it. Plus if your into taking your knives apart, this is one of the most simple ones to work with. I honestly can't think of a negative thing to say about the Native. At some point I plan on putting some micarta read more scales on mine. Don't hesitate to buy this guy. If I really had only one choice to carry a knife the Spyderco Native would be it.

My knife

I have carried a Spyderco, one gen or another, for the last 7 years. It is a great EDC knife. It's not scary, big enough for most tasks and it's a great deal for s35vn. I would recommend it to a friend, or a stranger.

Perfect Pocket Pal

What a knife. This thing is my go to knife out of the dozens that I own. Super lightweight, great steel, perfect jimping, amazing ergonomics, awesome choil, and a low price.

It doesn’t get better than this.

I will say that spuderco’s approach to the lightweight model isn’t for everyone. There are no liners, which is completely fine as the knife is plenty rigid. read more And there are no washers, bearings or anything of the sort. The blade glides on raised portions of the frn. The action is surprisingly smooth considering this, but it’ll never be a silky smooth knife, which shouldn’t be expected from a back lock anyway!

11/10 buy it now!

1st Spyderco

I usually change knives every 3 or 4 months cuz I like to, and I thought I would try a Spyderco. Sharp right out of the box and it stayed sharp! Sadly, I lost this one, something grabbed the clip and it fell out of my pocket. Rest assured, I'll be getting another USA made Spyderco!

Love this knife. There is a reason I ordered another within hours of losing the first one on a hike. Razor sharp is easily reached, and holds it like a pair of vice-grips.

Favorite EDC

Seth B.

I've had the lightweight for about 6 months now. And I have to say it has become my favorite EDC blade. Came Razor sharp and stayed razor sharp for a good while. The S35VN steel does take time to resharpen back to razor sharpness. But it is not to difficult with the right sharpener. I find myself carrying it more than my Griptillian, paramilitary 2, and kershaw skyline. You dont read more even notice it in pocket and the Ergos in hand feel great. I highly recommend picking this knife up. It is just one heck of a blade.

Very nice EDC knife

Robert L.

First of all, I'm left handed and carry my EDC knives in my left pocket, so some of my review won't apply to everyone. I carried a Kershaw Camber for several months and really wanted to like it. It's a great knife in most respects. However, the tip-up-only carry and essentially non-reversible pocket clip really made it difficult to safely carry left handed. After several holes in read more my pocket and a pretty good cut on my hand, it was time for something else.

I picked up a Spyderco Native-5 lightweight a few weeks ago and have been really happy with it. I prefer EDC knives in the 3" blade length range. I have larger hands and have no issues with the smaller handle whether using the finger choil on the blade or not. Blade shape is good. Deployment has more friction than other Spydercos I own, but I don't usually flick blades open anyway. It has a very solid looking lock. I like the CPM-s35vn steel so far. Sharpening has never really been an issue for me (I use diamond stones and 1200 and 2000 grit sandpaper), but it's significantly easier to reprofile the s35vn than s30v or ZDP-189. I carried a Delica for a long time, but didn't really like the relative lack of edge holding of the VG-10. Typical use for me is deburring or shaping wood, cutting glue off wood, food prep, and infrequent box cutting.
