I was expecting better action

Jason K.

I bought this knife to keep with me while backpacking in the swamp. I liked the idea that it would shed water and mud easily. My only complaint is the action is really stiff, most times the knife does not fully deploy unless I give a strong wrist flick with the opening action. Also, as a lefty, I really struggle with this frame lock. It’s become a two-handed open and close for read more me.

Almost a 5 star

Emilio M.

Excellent strength and quality of build, except one major detail: The cutout behind the pivot pin on the locking side of the frame has two VERY sharp corners that bite into your hand during use. Especially when using the left hand. They become exposed once the frame lock is engaged when the blade is deployed.

More than worth the money

Design by Kit Carson who passed in 2014, but CRKT still uses his name and video. File under L for Loyalty. Nice design, so-so quality control. Opening needs extra push using flipper. Frame lock looks sturdy but a bit rough unlocking, may smooth with use. Extra detent slows closing, good safety feature. Like double guard, watch it doesn't open in pocket. Blade very sharp, chisel read more ground, okay steel.

Really good

By making this in 12c27 CRKT has removed this classic's biggest weakness, poor steel. This thing's a great workhorse that holds it's edge pretty well!

Great Budget Knife

I love this knife because not only is it cheap, it's well made and reliable. I've carried mine for 2 years now and I haven't encountered any problems at all.

Beautiful CRKT M16

Tom C.

Has some heft and feels substantial in the hand, which I like. Smooth action, nice looking, love the bronze color. Can't wait to take it outside, take it camping, and put it to use.

Great rescue EDC knife

Adam L.

This is a great knife for anyone who wants to be prepared in emergency situations. The glass breaker and seatbelt cutter make it an exceptional rescue tool, and the serrated tanto blade came razor sharp. The lockup is solid, and the ergonomics feel great in the hand. This is a knife that can go to work and keep coming back for more.

Good beater knife

Kevin B.

Given the price of this knife, it is a pretty good deal. Love the tanto blade and the serrations. The knife looks really good. The 8Cr can easily be sharpened. The knife feels pretty good in your hand and you are able to get a good grip. I am not a huge fan of the AutoLAWKS on this, I wish i went with the frame lock variation without it. The flipper action is pretty smooth after read more it breaks in. Has thumb studs that are virtually unusable, so I am not sure why they are even on the knife. Given all this, its a decent knife for the price, however, there are better ones out there.

So Far So Good

This is a solid, conventional EDC. Nothing fancy but a good knife to have on hand. I have a number of CRKT. This one excites me less than others but that's no draw back really, just not as fancy or offbeat as some. In my case I find the flipping action to be a bit weak, you really have to flip it with intention to get it on the first try. Still good to have around. Liking it less read more means I will worry about it less. It's a good beater.

Not Bad At All

Lyle C.

I like this one quite a bit more than the CRKT M16-01S EDC which I purchased at the same time. I like the look of it more with the blade shape, the black EDP finish, and the serrated edge. This one has much nicer flipping action and is of greater use to me than the other. Both are beaters in that they are not so precious that I would be hesitant to really put them to the test, but read more this one just feels and operates with greater ease. The Carson does have the safety on it which was a deterrent at the outset, but I've gotten used to it so it has become comfortable to me now.

Simple beauty

Bryan W.

Very happy with this bigger version of the M16-01S that I've had for awhile. It's smooth opening, very comfortable in hand, and the tanto blade makes for a fine tactical knife. Contrary to what some have said, I find it fits well in pocket with the clip, and pulls out well given the secure hold it provides you in pocket.

Eh!

i don't love it, and I don't hate it. I'm still waiting for my reissues of the 02KS and 03KS to arrive; I may love the lighter knives. What I DO love about this reissue is NO auto-LAWKS, and the 4-way pocket clip. By the way, my knife came tip-down, and in my effort to switch to tip-up, I lost one, two or all three of the teeny-tiny screws at least once! Word to the wise: Work on read more a soft, white surface, and have a magnet handy. They really are small, and a bugger to find!

Slim and practical

John S.

Love this knife - so slim in pocket with a nice long blade. Doesn't flip as smoothly as some flippers, (my Civivi Shredder for example), but also doesn't fail to open. I'd love a deep carry pocket clip for this knife. I also really like it's larger brother the M16-04ks - great designs.

Great Form Factor

John S.

Terrific design; it's tough to find a stout and long blade tucked into such a thin design with reasonable weight. A substantial knife that sits easily in pocket. The lock-up on mine is terrific. The pivot needed to be loosened slightly on mine, and now opens nicely (no wrist flip needed). Would I love this with a smooth ball bearing pivot, titanium frame, and upgraded steel? Of read more course, but that would be a much more expensive knife. All in all, I love it and its smaller cousin the M16-03ks.

Good budget flipper

Kevin C.

It won't take a razor sharp edge but it will take a beating. I have used this knife for all sorts of things that you shouldn't use a knife for and it keeps serving me well after years of abuse. Anytime I am working on a job that I wouldn't want to risk breaking one of my more expensive EDC blades, this is my go to.

Is this the real M16?

Matt L.

CRKT M16, Sigh. Is this really the legendary M-16 in its modern form? I have heard so much about this blade. And I tried so hard to love it as much as CRKT wants me to. But alas, "never meet your heroes" has never rung so true. Let's start with the bad.
1. Action is as smooth as sandpaper on the inside of your elbows. The disappointment I felt, coming from the CRKT Caligo to read more this, was immeasurable. Don't even try lube or loosening the axle pin, it just messes with the blade centering within the handle. With the heavy blade, at least gravity is on your side. But for you who lack muscular index fingers, I sentence you all to wrist flicks! 2. The pocket clip is just terrible. The pocket clip comes tip down (ugh) and snags your pocket Every. Single. Time. The clip presses the fabric of the pocket into the frame lock. So I went to flip it to tip up....and stripped two of my tools trying. The small bolts are stuck tight and way over tightened. 3. After you manage to get it out of your pocket, you will find that the finish on the handle is shot after a week of pocket wear. Just by removing the knife from your pocket and putting it back in for a couple of months, is enough to make this cheap finish tap out. 4. The frame lock doesn't have enough distinction between the two halves of the handle. I can't close this knife! You really got to ram your thumb into the frame lock to push the metal bit over and release the blade. You may not notice it at first, but open and close this thing five times in a row. I dare you.
Now the good. 1. It looks really nice. Nice skeleton black tanto, looks just fly. 2. It feels good in your hand, thanks to ergonomics that are not garbage. 3. It is a big knife (personally I like that) and it is VERY light for its size and quite slim in the pocket.
All in all, this is a pretty great knife...that just lacks severely in the practical department. Which is the exact opposite of what I was expecting from the M16. So a large part of my anger, is just disappointment from large expectation subversions (and the fact that I paid...HOW MUCH? For this ill-designed knife). The knife is showing signs of breaking in over time, but before you buy this knife, I would strongly encourage you to consider the CRKT Fossil first. I like it more in almost every way, and think it represents CRKT better. M16 is alright, it just really needs some ball bearings and a different clip. 66/100

Hard not to like but... the steel.

Tyler B.

Love this knife a lot. I LOVE the serration on the back of this knife; it goes through everything like butter. The Tanto Edge comes is handy so much! And you can beat it to death and the blade stays strong and tight! BUT... the steel is HORRIBLE. It doesn't keep an edge to save its life. If it was made is a far superior steel I would but it again in a heart beat!

Great!

It is a great knife! Fits perfect in the hand and doesn't feel heavy for the size. It take a beating. 10/10 would recommend.

My favorite budget knife

I ENJOY this knife as my EDC tool! It is surprisingly stable in my grip, very thin and pocket friendly, slices way better than I thought it would, and the flipper tab is GREAT!

A classic!

Daniel M.

Greetings co-dependents.

Clean lines, a bit stiff to deploy till oiled & broken in, the safety takes some getting used to, as with all new knives the edge was a bit rough & required a more refined sharpening, but loving the quirks is part of what collecting is all about. A keeper.

Great except for the clip

Aidan l.

I use this knife everyday and it works amazing. the only problem i have with it is that the clip gets easily caught and bent out. its a pain to bend back too. other than that it works mint.

Good solid budget flipper

Rob M.

Had this almost a year now and was one of the first knives I got when I restarted my collection and even tho I’ve added several higher end blades since i still regularly carry. I like the thin handle and have been pocket carrying it with no clip In the back pocket. It is unnoticeable and easy to grab this way for me. The steel is pretty good and sharpens easy and the lock up is read more perfect on mine. The sound of it locking up or closings are one of the joys of the stainless steel frame. Great knife at this price. I’d pay a heck of a lot more for a remade version of the whole KS series if CRKT did it in titanium and like CPM-154. Do it!

OIF VERSION

Nathaniel b.

I bought this version of the CRKT M16zsf at the PX in Iraq. It’s still a good strong knife. OC the last 14 years the tip has broke and the pocket clip fell off.
It is heavy and the hilt tabs poke you in your pocket, although that’s what makes it nice when in use.

Tactical edc

Jason G.

Great tactical EDC.... The thing disappears in the pocket. Has a nice flipping action for an in assisted knife once you break it in....I carried this religiously for just over a year and handed it off to a buddy who was going on a hiking trip and had no knives at all he was happy but I immediately went out and bought a new one so I would go without...

Hard to find a better similar knife for the price

Dennis M.

I have purchased a number of these knives and carry one and have gifted several others. The blades are of decent steel, the knives open almost as fast as an auto and lock up great. I have not always been a liner lock fan but CRKT changed my opinion regarding that. In short, these are a "best bang for the buck" kind of knives and I don't think there is a better every day carry knife read more out there especially at this price point. Simply a superb knife and an awesome bargain!

Good, but not the best

Kyle B.

Good knife. Strong large, and will flip reliably. However the little safety switch that keeps the liner from slipping can easily be bent. This is a moderate use knife, not hard use like CRKT advertise it to be

Solid well priced knife

Arlen F.

Great design and overall feel, the action on mine is still a little stiff but it’s starting to loosen up with time and use. I would have given it 5 but the action and lockup out of the box were not excellent like my lck and other crkt flippers

Nice EDC

Terry H.

Perfect size for EDC, lightweight and very sharp out of the box. Deploys easy with the flipper and I like the LAWKS system. Have carried and used everyday for a week and has held up good so far, not the greatest steel but a lot of knife for the money. I love CRKT knives.

Impressive

I bought this knife as a gift for my uncle because someone stole the original and when I got it I was very impressed with how great it was overall I’m going to buy one for myself soon. It’s small in a good way it’s light with a very solid lockup

Tough as nails

Eric W.

I’ve hammered on the back of it with an actual hammer. I’ve carried this thing at my construction job for over 7 years. Can sharpen it to a razors edge even though it will lose it just by looking at it. The 2 lock system is kinda weird at first but once you get used to it, it becomes second nature. No blade play after all this time. Have used the flippers as a hammer in a pinch read more and it works fine. Only real issue is trying to keep the corrosion off. The coating Holds up well but when it does thin out, knife starts to corrode immediately. Just make sure you wipe it off whenever it gets wet. I absolutely love this knife.

Value

Small for a 3 inch knife which makes it very portable , The clip works well and the blade comes sharp. Blade deploys well and centering is even. At this price a solid buy.

Haven't used it hard

John k.

Just got this knife in the mail. Good fit and finish for a budget tactical folder though the handle scales are a bit slick, it sits nicely in the hand with room to spare. The blade grind is In deed hollow but the initial edge is chisel ground. And one cool feature that i stumbled upon was that if you place the pocket clip in the " tip-up" position, the guard on the top of the blade read more works in the same manner as an Emerson wave!

Great knife! Gaurd is a bit weird though.

Joshua A.

Knife WAS hard to open at first. But as always that's just because it's new. Great self defense knife! Blade is a decent length and the Serrations you rarely half to sharpen. The gaurd however is a bit of an inconvenience sometimes. I've accidentally scratched myself and cars from it. More cause the teeth on the flipper is a bit aggresive. Overall fantastic knife though!

Needs break-in and tweaks

Troy T.

The mechanism definitely benefits from break-in. It gets much better as it’s used more. Several hundred open-close cycles are necessary to break it in.

After break-in, use a good lubricant and the mechanism will glide open much better.

The pocket clip loosened over two weeks, and the torx bolts that secured it backed out a touch.

It’s easy to fix:

One read more bolt at at time, remove the Torx bolt, apply a touch of *blue* (medium strength) thread lock to the tip of the bolt, and screwing it back into place. This will keep the torx bolts (and pocket clip) in place — while allowing for service in the future.

Don’t use red or green (high strength) threadlockers, or you’ll never be able to get the bolt out out without melting the scales.

Favorite knife

Victor s.

One of the best knives I've ever bought, I find myself using it more than any other in my collection.

The locking mechanisms are perfectly solid, they are not lying when they say it feels like a fixed blade.

The double flipper design has a hidden feature: if you wear it tip-up in your pocket, you can hook the second flipper onto the back of you pocket as you come out read more and it will deploy automatically, without actually having an automatic mechanism. This is great for blue state residents who can only carry manual folders.

The color of the blade is goldish/bronze like the finish on a SCAR rifle, and the handle is dark earth.

The veff serrations are the best part of the knife and the main reason why I use it so much. The small points are perfect for tiny precision cuts, and the 45 degree angle allows you to hook underneath things and pull toward you for great leverage. I find that there are many types of cutting that I can only achieve with these serrations, so I'll never go back to the regular kind.

Slim EDC

Jeremy S.

I bought this for EDC use. It’s performed well, but it’s a bit on the heavy side for its size. The lock mechanism is smooth and easy to manipulate with one hand. The belt clip is a bit shorter than what I’m used to, but it arrived nice and tight. The flip feature on this knife makes it loads of fun to mess with.

Meh

Mark D.

Looks good and opens and closes good enough and the frame lock is pretty good but it doesn’t hold an edge at all and is difficult to get to razor sharp. Likely won’t buy another CRKT knife tho

Best EDC I’ve ever owned.

Joshua M.

I carry this knife because I can’t carry a fixed blade survival knife on my person without looking like a weirdo. This is the next best thing. Tungsten glass breaker will shatter or put a hole in anything in comes near, and you can also etch just about anything with it. The strap cutter is useful for just about any small cutting task — twine, tape, straps, etc. And as far as read more the blade goes, I have punctured a stainless steel trash can lid with it and it takes a very keen edge. Love the flip-open and the AutoLawks too. Zero worries about the liner lock closing. The only bad thing about this knife is that I haven’t been able to justify buying another folder since 2014 when I got it. Now, I’m just going to buy one of the two smaller versions of this knife. Maybe even both. I like this knife so much I actually bought another one for just in case I lose or this one.

EDC

First off its a great little knife, i have had it for about 6 years now and have had only problem with it the whole time. The problem was with the safety it somehow got stuck causing the blade to stay open. I took it apart and just took out the safety and it still works great.

Good Enough for me

Tyler K.

While talking to a friend who just came back from deployment I asked him what knife he and his buddies carried. He pulled out this and said that CRKT is what most of the guys he was with carried because they were cheap and lasted. That’s good enough for me

Amazing Knife. No real problems

Andrew H.

This knife does everything it was designed for. The CRKT M16-01KZ is a tiny knife that basically disappears in your pocket, but when you pull it out and hit the flipper, you have a respectably large knife. When you compare this knife to other knives with 3.125 inch blades, the M16-01KZ manages to appear small because of the tiny handle. Only problem I find is the lack of G-10 handles read more (I would have liked that), milled out holes in the steel liners, and a better back spacer (or multiple back spacers).

Amazing Knife. Maybe a bit heavy

Andrew H.

Great Action. Ergonomics fit your hand perfectly given your hand isn't too small. This knife is built for slightly bigger hands (my hands fit 3.25 inch knives better). The Seat belt cutter and glass breaker work without fail. Nothing has broken or fallen off, not a concern at all with this knife. Operating the Auto-Lawks mechanism takes a bit of practice (toying with it for a few read more minutes everyday). Pretty easy to remove the Auto-Lawks by disassembling the knife. Only problem I find is the fact that the holes in the handle are not milled out at all (I believe this adds an extra 0.3 oz of unnecessary weight). And I would like a G-10 version.

Current work EDC

Daniel H.

My wife purchased this knife for me as a gift in 2006 or so. It was my EDC for years, and still is for work, and was only recently replaced for casual use by a smaller model. This knife is fairly large in the hand and is not very subtle. The AUS 8A steel isn't the best at holding an edge compared to higher end steel, but does take an edge easily. The lockup is secure and the Lawks read more safety is a plus, in my opinion. After a little practice you can disengage the safety easily, although friends who are unfamiliar with it will struggle. Humorously. The blade geometry has kept the point in good condition and the aluminum handle has held up well despite being used inappropriately as a hammer on occasion. The grind on the blade is kind of a chisel grind, which I could take or leave, but is easy enough to deal with. This knife was double the current price when it came out, and I thought it was fair at the time, the new price is great.

Beast of a knife!

David B.

I bought this knife years ago and it was perfect. It was a beast due to its size and I love the desert camo color. The double lock, to close the blade, made me feel much safer when using the knife and did not take long to get used to at all. I unfortunately lost this knife though but I would buy it again and again.

Great tactical knife

Andrew H.

This knife really satisfies everything it is designed for. This means that it might not satisfy every user. The user definitely needs relatively large hands and a bit of fineness in the finger tips. Operating the Auto-Lawks system takes a bit of practice. I got it in a matter of days by just player with it 5 minutes a day. If needed, one can remove the Auto-Lawks just by opening read more up the knife. The Cross-guard, G-10, and Ergos work together to produce a handle that is basically guaranteed to not slip out of or in your hand. My hand is a touch small for this knife, yet forward and reverse grip feel perfectly fine. Action is good for a near 4 inch blade. The VEFF serrations stayed sharp for a long time now and still cut everything I throw at it. The steel is just great and especially with the factory sharp quality.

Good Knife

Preston H.

This knife is well build, solid, and sharp. I also really like the flipper design, it makes deployment very fast. The only reason I gave four instead of five stars is the secondary lock. It works, and once you get used to it it's ok, I just don't feel like it's necessary for me personally.

Nice small pocket knife

David H.

I bought this a couple of days ago. The factory edge is very sharp. In the pocket, it fits almost invisibly. I really didn't notice it was there. The handle is just a bit small for my big hands but it can hold its own unpacking equipment in a datacenter. It flips open very easily. It makes a good light-duty EDC.

Nice knife

Overall good knife for the money. Can be sharpened easily and has the lawks system as an added safety. You do need to use some wrist to get this knife to flip open using the flipper.

This is a great bang for your buck! Easy to sharpen and keeps the edge too. Only pet peeve is the double lock. Hard to do one handed sometimes.

Very nice

Cruz R.

This is a very good flipper. It flips smoothly and fast. The "thumb studs" dont work, but i also dont believe their meant to be used that way. Their more of a stopper so the blade wont hit the back of the handle where the screws are. But over all its a very thin light knife. Also it may take some time to close the knife because the frame lock is a little touch. But i would recomend.

Good edc

Philip r.

Got this knife along time ago and it was my edc for years. I need to send it in because the autolawk isn't working. But for what I paid and how much use I got out, it was well worth it. Ckrt has a no question asked warranty so I know they will fix or replace it.

Good Knife at a reasonable price

About three years ago, I wasn't into knives. I wanted and EDC type knife, and I was in St. Nick's Knife Shop. I paid a little over $40 for this knife. I have bought several other knives since, but this is always in my rotation. The steel takes a sharp edge rather easily. The 8Cr15MoV or whatever (AUS 8 equivalent) is pretty decent. It is tough and takes a beating. I like the look read more as well (sort of Stiletto design). The knife locks very tight. No blade wobble at all. The one draw back is the clip. The screws keep backing out of the holes. I constantly have to re-tighten them every few months. I will try blue locktite on them next time. The warranty is awesome....lifetime. The price and quality make this a great EDC.
